SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 23, 2024 Mustangs defeat Pirates 44-12 Mustangs defeat Grant Union Ranked third in OSAA 2A football & Enterprise The Heppner Mustang football team traveled to Boardman and defeated the Riverside Pirates by the score of 44-12. The Mustangs (7-0,4-0) are tied for the top spot in the Blue Mountain Conference and are third in the OSAA 2A Football Rankings. Heppner got the ball to start the game with the Pirates and put together a nice nine play drive all the way to the Pirate two-yard line. But after a penalty, a fumble that was recov- ered by the Mustangs and several incomplete passes, the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs. The Heppner defense stepped up and forced a Riverside punt and the offense took over near midfield. On the first offensive play, Hayden McMahon ran the ball for 20 yards, then it was Alakae Rodriguez who carried it for 8, 13 and 2 yards before he took a handoff and blasted into the end zone from 1 yard out for a touchdown. Quarterback Mason Orem then handed the ball to Hayden McMa- hon, and he scooted in for the 2-pt. conversion to give the Mustangs a 8-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. The Heppner kickoff pinned Riverside deep in their own territory and the stingy Mustang defense forced another punt. Heppner got a great field position at the Pirate 24- yard line. On the very next play Orem found Nick Wen- berg open and hit him with a with a pass of 24 yards for another touchdown. That quick score made it 14-0. The teams traded possessions and then Wenberg stepped in front of a Pirate pass, intercepted it and sprinted 30 yards for a touchdown. Tripp Stewart ran the ball in for the 2-pt. conversion to give the Mus- tangs a 22-0 lead as the first quarter came to a close. Heppner got the ball back early in the second quarter and scored again when Zach Brown outran the Pirate defense for a 40- yard touchdown. Rodriguez ran for the 2-pt. conversion to make it 30-0 at this point. Another Riverside punt and a 20-yard return of the punt by Stewart gave the Mustangs the ball in great field position. Orem then dropped back and hit Keaton Coiner with an 11- yard touchdown pass. That extended the Heppner lead to 36-0 with nine minutes to go in the half. Once again, the Pirates had to punt the ball away to the Mustang offense. It then only took three plays for Heppner to score again. Caylan Proudfoot came into the game at quarterback and led a drive that con- sisted of a 10-yard run by Stewart, a 16-yard run by Wenberg and then Proud- foot called his own number and scored the touchdown from 4 yards out. The 2-pt. conversion was scored by Hayden McMahon to give the Mustangs a 44-0 lead mid-way through the sec- ond quarter. The teams traded possessions for the rest of the quarter to make the score 44-0 at halftime. The second half would be played with a running clock the Pirates got the ball first. The Heppner defense stopped them on downs and the Mustang coaches put in many of the younger players at this point in the game so they could gain some valuable varsity playing time. A Heppner drive was stopped when a Riverside player intercepted a pass and ran it in for a touchdown. That made the score 44-6 late in the third quarter. The teams traded possessions several more times in the game and then Riverside scored their final touchdown on a 22-yard pass play with just over three minutes to play in the game. That made the score 44-12. Heppner got the ball after the Pirate kickoff and ran the ball for three con- secutive plays to end the game with the Mustangs getting the win by the score of 44-12. Heppner had 265 total yards in the game. They ran the ball for 205 yards and passed it for 60. Riverside had 43 total yards for the game and finished with –1 yards rushing and they passed the ball for 44. Orem was 3-7 passing the ball for 36 yards and 2 touchdowns. Proudfoot was 1-4 for 24 yards and threw an interception. Wenberg caught 2 passes for 25 yards and a touchdown while Darby Spivey had 1 reception for 24 yards. Keaton Coiner had 1 catch in the game for 11 yards and a touchdown. Brown led the stable of backs with 40 yards on only 1 carry and scored a touchdown on that run. Hayden McMahon was next with 34 yards, Stewart had 33 and Rodriguez finished with 31 yards and a score. Freshman Jace Wilson ran the ball 6 times for 28 yards and Wenberg had 16. John Lindsay carried the ball 4 times and gained 15 yards and Proudfoot had 4 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Mustang defense dominated the game and was led by Freshman Lucus King who finished with 8 tackles. With 4 tackles each were John Lindsay, Owen Guerra and Lane Critchlow. Jace Wilson finished the game with 3 tackles and with 2 tackles each were Wenberg, Rodriguez, Ryan Haugen, Landon McMahon, Kooper Miller and Darby Spivey. With 1 tackle for the Mustangs were Orem, Brown, Andrew Lindsay, Joseph Albitre, Gage Heideman and Landon Tuttle. The Mustangs have a home game this Friday against the Grant Union Prospectors. Game time is 7 PM at Les Payne Field. Annie Flower- HEP- PNER 3, GRANT UNION 0 — Hallee Hisler had 10 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to lead the Mustangs to a 25-20, 25-12, 25-12 Blue Mountain Conference home win over the Prospectors. Maya Payne added 14 digs, 14 assists and eight kills for the Mustangs, while Ava Gerry had 13 digs, 14 assists, five kills and four aces. Freshman Isa Payne had seven kills, 11 digs and two blocks, and Katie Spiv- ey had 10 kills. HEPPNER 3, ENTERPRISE 0 — The Mustangs finished the reg- ular season with a 25-8, 25-8, 25-8 Blue Mountain Conference home win over the Outlaws.
