Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November 1, 2023 -- SEVEN Mustangs win final BMC game 54-14 move on to playoffs while Martin Medina car- The Heppner Mustang football team won their fi- nal Blue Mountain Confer- ence game of the season by defeating the Grant Union Prospectors by the score of 54-14. The Mustangs (7-2 overall and 4-1 BMC) finished the regular season as the 5th-ranked team in the final OSAA 2A Football Rankings. They will start the postseason with a home game against the Bandon/ Pacific Tigers who were the fourth-place finishers in the Valley Coast Conference. The Tigers finished the season with a 6-3 record and were number 10 in the final OSAA rankings. Against the Prospectors, the Mustangs started fast and didn›t let up for the entire game. Martin Medina kicked off to start the game for Heppner. The defense forced a GU punt that was blocked by Caden George and recovered by Caleb George. On the next play, Quarterback Mason Orem handed the ball off to Hayden McMahon who scampered in from 16 yards out for the score. Cameron Proudfoot scored the 2-pt. conversion to give the Mus- tangs a quick 8-0 lead. On the next Prospector possession, they fumbled the ball and Hayden Mc- Mahon recovered it near midfield. A 47-yard run by Hayden and a 10-run by Caden George led to Ca- den scoring a touchdown from 2 yards out. Cameron Proudfoot carried the ball in for the 2-pt. conversion to give the Mustangs the lead 16-0 midway through the first quarter. Another GU punt gave the Mustangs great field position again. A 49-yard pass completion from Orem to Nick Wenberg led to a touchdown when Cameron Proudfoot scored from 9 yards out. Caden George then caught a pass from Orem for the 2-pt. conver- sion to make the score 24-0. On the next Prospector drive, they fumbled the ball and Hayden McMahon recovered it for Heppner. On the very next play, the Mustangs scored when Ca- den George ran the ball in from 38 yards out. Orem passed the ball to Caden for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 32-0. Cameron Proudfoot intercepted a GU pass that led to another Heppner score. The Mustangs went on a seven-play drive that ended when Cameron Proudfoot scored from 9 yards out. Caden George ran for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 40-0 early in the second quarter. The Heppner defense forced another Prospector punt, and the Mustangs went on a six-play drive that ended with a score. Keaton Coiner caught a 17- yard pass from Orem for a touchdown. That made the score of the game 46-0 at halftime. The entire second half would be played with a running clock because the Mustangs were ahead by over 35 points. After the GU kickoff to start the second half, Heppner scored again just two plays later. Tripp Stewart had a 27-yard run and then Conner Wilson busted through the line and outran the entire GU defense for a 42-yard touch- down. Quarterback Caylan Proudfoot passed the ball to Caleb George for the 2-pt. conversion to take the score to 54-0. Grant Union scored on their next possession to bring the score to 54-6. The teams traded possessions until GU scored again to make the score of the game 54-14 as the third quarter ended. The Mustangs had 22 first downs and GU only 7. For the game, Heppner had 492 total yards and held the Prospectors to 201. The Mustangs rushed for 381 yards and passed the ball for 111. A balanced running game was led by Conner Wilson with 84 yards and a touchdown on 7 carries. Hayden McMahon finished with 71 yards and a score on only 3 carries. Tripp Stewart carried the ball 8 times and gained 62 yards. Keaton Coiner had a catch for 17 yards and a touchdown. The Heppner defense was led by Caleb George who recorded 11 tackles in the game. Owen Guerra was next with 6 tackles and with 3 each were Cameron Proudfoot, Medina, and Stewart. With 2 tackles each in the game were Wen- berg, Caden George, and Landon McMahon.
