on to playoffs
while Martin Medina car-
The Heppner Mustang
football team won their fi-
nal Blue Mountain Confer-
ence game of the season by
defeating the Grant Union
Prospectors by the score
of 54-14. The Mustangs
(7-2 overall and 4-1 BMC)
finished the regular season
as the 5th-ranked team in
the final OSAA 2A Football
Rankings. They will start
the postseason with a home
game against the Bandon/
Pacific Tigers who were the
fourth-place finishers in the
Valley Coast Conference.
The Tigers finished the
season with a 6-3 record
and were number 10 in the
final OSAA rankings.
Against the
Prospectors, the Mustangs
started fast and didn›t let up
for the entire game. Martin
Medina kicked off to start
the game for Heppner. The
defense forced a GU punt
that was blocked by Caden
George and recovered by
Caleb George. On the next
play, Quarterback Mason
Orem handed the ball off
to Hayden McMahon who
scampered in from 16 yards
out for the score. Cameron
Proudfoot scored the 2-pt.
conversion to give the Mus-
tangs a quick 8-0 lead.
On the next Prospector
possession, they fumbled
the ball and Hayden Mc-
Mahon recovered it near
midfield. A 47-yard run by
Hayden and a 10-run by
Caden George led to Ca-
den scoring a touchdown
from 2 yards out. Cameron
Proudfoot carried the ball
in for the 2-pt. conversion
to give the Mustangs the
lead 16-0 midway through
the first quarter.
Another GU punt gave
the Mustangs great field
position again. A 49-yard
pass completion from Orem
to Nick Wenberg led to a
touchdown when Cameron
Proudfoot scored from 9
yards out. Caden George
then caught a pass from
Orem for the 2-pt. conver-
sion to make the score 24-0.
On the next Prospector
drive, they fumbled the ball
and Hayden McMahon
recovered it for Heppner.
On the very next play, the
Mustangs scored when Ca-
den George ran the ball in
from 38 yards out. Orem
passed the ball to Caden
for the 2-pt. conversion to
make the score 32-0.
Cameron Proudfoot
intercepted a GU pass that
led to another Heppner
score. The Mustangs went
on a seven-play drive that
ended when Cameron
Proudfoot scored from 9
yards out. Caden George
ran for the 2-pt. conversion
to make the score 40-0 early
in the second quarter.
The Heppner defense
forced another Prospector
punt, and the Mustangs
went on a six-play drive
that ended with a score.
Keaton Coiner caught a 17-
yard pass from Orem for a
touchdown. That made the
score of the game 46-0 at
halftime. The entire second
half would be played with a
running clock because the
Mustangs were ahead by
over 35 points.
After the GU kickoff
to start the second half,
Heppner scored again
just two plays later. Tripp
Stewart had a 27-yard run
and then Conner Wilson
busted through the line
and outran the entire GU
defense for a 42-yard touch-
down. Quarterback Caylan
Proudfoot passed the ball to
Caleb George for the 2-pt.
conversion to take the score
to 54-0.
Grant Union scored
on their next possession to
bring the score to 54-6. The
teams traded possessions
until GU scored again to
make the score of the game
54-14 as the third quarter
ended.
