Morrow County passed the Greater Idaho ballot mea- sure with 60 percent of its votes last November. The Morrow County Board of Commissioners held the first of its three required meetings May 3 during its regular com- mission meeting in Heppner. Present to present the case for Greater Idaho was Mike McCarter, 76, of La Pine, OR. McCarter is president of Move Oregon’s Borders and Citizens for Greater Idaho. He said he is an Orego- nian, born and raised, and the only time he left Oregon was during the Vietnam War. He has spent his life working in agriculture. “I’m in this for my family and other generations that are coming on,” said McCarter. He said he didn’t feel it was necessary to go into detail about the reasons behind the movement. “If you look at what’s coming out of Salem right now, what has come out of Salem in the past, it is contrary to most of what we believe,” he said, citing the legalization of marijuana, relaxed drug laws, parental rights, and Mea- sure 3501, which would have decriminalized homeless en- campments. He also reiterated that the county had not voted to move to Idaho, but simply to discuss the option. “Right now, there is no other option out there to stop what’s coming towards us from the West,” he said. “If ev- ery citizen in eastern Oregon voted, every citizen,” he said, “All it takes is 40 percent of the Portland vote to trump us completely. “So we’re being mar- ginalized. Our voices are not being heard,” said McCarter, but then added that he had spoken to a Western Oregon legislator who said Eastern Oregon is being heard but, “We just outvote you.” “When they pass laws that correct situations, or they feel correct situations, in the Wil- lamette Valley and the western side of the Cascades, it affects us,” McCarter added. “But they don’t care if it’s affected us negatively.” At the time of the May 3 meeting, 11 out of the pro- posed 15 counties had voted in favor of discussing Greater Idaho. Wallowa County now brings the total to 12. Crook County commissioners have also decided to put the issue on an upcoming ballot. “It has no authority to do anything to the legislature,” McCarter finished, “but it does send a word across to them that you have a problem in Eastern Oregon with it.” The board of commis- sioners will next discuss the issue on Aug. 16 in Irrigon and again Nov. 1 in Heppner. Meetings in Heppner will be held at the Bartholomew Building, while Irrigon meet- ings will take place at the Morrow County Government Center. The man then sped away from the scene in the red jeep. Gonzalez then attempted to force the female into his car. She resisted, and Gonzalez fled the scene. The incident apparently stemmed from a domestic dispute between Gonzalez and the female vic- tim. After investigation, mul- tiple witness interviews and reviewing multiple videos, MCSO arrested Gonzalez on the evening of May 5. He remains lodged in Umatilla County Jail with no bail. Gonzalez has been charged with attempted kid- napping II, attempted assault I, unlawful use of a weapon, harassment – domestic vio- lence and recklessly endan- gering another. MCSO Deputy Killgore and Detective Garcia have been investigating this case. This investigation is on-going.
