Loren Trujillo (freshman) and Kylie Holden (senior) did not place, but Journey Cavan-Harris (freshman) placed fifth and earned a spot at state. Cavan-Harris is the first HHS female to place at the district level and earn a place at state. Cavan-Harris started out strong in the first cham- pionship round, winning by fall over Payton Mauldin of St. Helens. She then went on to win by fall over Katelyn Wiseman of Riv- erside in a hard-fought quarterfinal match before being taken down by Delia Gulzow of La Grande in the semifinal round. She was defeated by Kiara Rios of Dayton in the consolation semifinal, and then took another victory over Maul- din in the fifth-place match. A no-contest loss to Rios in the fourth-place match gave Cavan-Harris fifth place in the tournament. Also wrestling for the Mustang girls were Loren Trujillo and Kylie Holden. Both girls wrestled well this season but came up against Heppner wrestler Journey Cavan-Harris placed fifth at districts to earn a spot at the state tournament, the first female Heppner wrestler to do so. -Photo by Tylynn Cimmiyotti tough opponents in the Spe- cial District 1 tournament. Holden won by fall over Cheyenne Neihuser of Warrenton in the first championship round, only to suffer two consecutive falls to wrestlers from La Grande and Gilchrist. Trujillo lost by techni- cal fall to Adalia Chavez of Riverside and then took another fall to Krista Boz- ley of Neah-Kah-Nie to end her run at the SD1 podium. The Heppner boys also competed over the weekend. Full coverage will follow in next week’s Gazette-Times. Ione libraries receive science books Ione libraries have some new science books thanks to a local participa- tion in a national project. The Outstanding Science Trade Books (OSTB) 2023 project culminated this month with the nominated books going to the Ione Public Library and the Ione Community School library. The project was spear- headed by Sarah Carl- son, who was one of a nine-member national panel for selecting the books for the annual list. The Chil- dren’s Book Council and the National Science Teach- ing Association (NSTA) have coordinated on the review and selection of the OSTB list for the past 50 years. Carlson, a local retired science teacher and member of NSTA, was se- lected to serve on the panel for three years. Each year 250-300 newly published K-12 science trade books are nominated for the award. The publishers send their nominations to each pan- el member, who then has three months to read and review the books. The panel then meets to decide which books should be on the OSTB list. This year, Carlson worked with the Ione com- munity in reading and re- viewing the books. Ione City Hall served as the repository for the books during the process. Each book was reviewed for its science content, illustra- tions, activities, format and design. The Ione reader/ reviewer volunteers were Maureen McElligott, Bar- bara Collin, Betty Riet- mann, Rachell Hughes, Becky Doherty, Liz Peter- son, Linda Neiffer, Brandi Orem and Mary Rietmann. “Without these commu- nity volunteers, the review process would be difficult given the time constraints of the selection process,” said Carlson. With the release of the 2023 OSTB list, the Ione Public Library and the Ione Community School library have received all of the nominated books. “The best part of the project is giving the books away, and knowing that young readers have ac- cess to the most current outstanding science trade books,” said Carlson. Since Carlson’s com- mittee appointment was for three years, the 2021 OSTB books can be found at the Gilliam County Library in Condon, and the 2022 OSTB books at the Heppner schools. A full listing of the 2023 OSTB books, as well as past year’s winners, can be found at https://www. cbcbooks.org/readers/read- ing-lists/outstanding-sci- ence-lists/. Dust off those walking/ running shoes and get a jump start to all the family fun during Heppner’s Wee Bit O’ Ireland St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Friends Helping Friends will again be hosting the St. Patrick’s Day Remembrance Walk and 5k run on Saturday, March 18. Registration and a social hour will begin at 8:30 a.m.. The walk and 5k run will begin at 9:30 a.m. following the annual group photo. Along with the fun traditions from the event, the Friends Helping Friends committee is also work- ing on some new twists. Currently in the works is making the 5k run a timed event, though it will still be all for fun. All participants of the walk and run will receive a two-toned event bracelet to add to their collection from all of the past years’ events, but the event will now also have tee shirts for sale. Friends Helping Friends has not had tee shirts since the inaugural year of the event, saying they wanted to use all of the proceeds to benefit each year’s cause versus an added expense. Now, after their “15 th - ish year,” they have decided to bring them back. Anyone will be able to purchase one of the newly designed, green, short or long sleeve tee shirts the morning of the event. Because of a limit- ed number of volunteers, Friends Helping Friends will not be taking pre-sales on tees. However, they are encouraging folks to pre-register for the event to help things go smoothly on event day. Anyone can follow the event on Facebook at “Hep- pner St. Patrick’s Day Re- membrance Walk/5k Run” for event updates. Regis- tration forms can be found on that page, as well, and can be printed out and sent in with donations. Checks should be made payable to Friends Helping Friends and mailed c/o Kathi Dick- enson, PO Box 566, Hep- pner, OR 97836. All money that’s raised through the event stays lo- cal and will be used toward health care needs within the community. “Táimid ag tnúth le tú fheiceáil go luath!” said a committee statement.
