Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 16, 2022 -- FIVE PUBLIC NOTICE LEGAL NOTICE FOR DEIS COMMENT PERIOD Ellis Integrated Vegetation Project The draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for the Ellis Integrated Vegetation Project is now available for public review and comment. A notice of availability (NOA) was published in the Federal Register on March 4, 2022, and a Legal Notice was published in the East Ore- gonian (the newspaper of record) on March 3, 2022. The Ellis project is in- tended to increase forest health and vigor; enhance unique plant communities; improve wildlife habitat; maintain and continue public and traditional land uses; and protect values at risk, public and fire- fighter safety. The project is located on the Umatilla National Forest between Ukiah and Heppner, OR and is within Morrow, Umatilla, and Grant Coun- ties. The project area is about 114,600 acres which includes approximately 4,600 acres of private land. Approximately 105,000 acres may be considered for treatment on National Forest System lands. No treatments are proposed by private landholders at this time, but the Forest Service is working collab- oratively with partners and neighbors to improve re- siliency across boundaries and meet objectives of this project. The DEIS analyzes the en- vironmental consequences of the no action alterna- tive, the proposed action, and four action alternatives developed in response to public comments. The DEIS and supporting doc- uments are available on the Umatilla National For- est project webpage at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/ project/?project=41350 This project is subject to comment pursuant to 36 CFR 218, Subparts A and B. Only those who sub- mit timely project-specific written comments during a public comment period are eligible to file an objection. Individuals or representa- tives of an entity submit- ting comments must sign the comments or verify identity upon request. The Forest Service will accept comments on the DEIS for 45 days fol- lowing publication of the NOA in the Federal Reg- ister published on March 4, 2022. The publication date of the NOA in Feder- al Register is the exclusive means for calculating the comment period. Com- menters should not rely upon dates or timeframe information provided by any other source. It is the commenter’s responsibili- ty to ensure timely receipt of comments (36 CFR 218.25). Submit electronic com- ments to the Ellis Project website (link above) un- der Get Connected on the right side of screen, click on Comment on Project. Attachments may be in the following formats: plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), Word (.doc, .docx), or portable document for- mat (.pdf). Congregate meals can be offered in a variety of set- tings, including nutrition sites, senior centers/com- munity centers, churches, schools, adult care facili- ties, restaurants, or other congregate settings. Gath- ering for meals offers the opportunity to socialize, gain support by coming together, and includes nu- trition education provided through CAPECO. The service is more than just a meal; its purpose is to nourish the whole person. Home delivered meals are critical to maintaining in- dependence and allowing people to remain living in their own homes. Friend- ly visiting when meals are delivered one or more days/week also provides vital social connection for people who may feel iso- lated or lonely. Interested parties can re- quest a copy of the RFP packet by contacting Jody Warnock, CAPECO Pro- gram Director, at jwar- nock@capeco-works.org or 541-278-5668. By Blake Carter Heppner is coming off of what was the best base- ball season the town has seen in a while. The Mus- tangs shocked everyone by going 15-4 and plac- ing third in the COVID baseball state tournament. Heppner graduated four seniors however, all four of whom started and con- tributed heavily to the team. Heppner will also be without starting outfielder Jace Coe who is recov- ering from a knee injury. Five spots opened up and were quickly filled before the season-opening double header between the Mus- tangs and the La Grande JV team. Heppner rolled out their varsity team for the first game with La Grande’s JV team. Tucker Ashbeck took the mound and held La Grande score- less for three innings. The Mustangs struck first, scor- ing three runs. In the fol- lowing inning La Grande scored two runs to keep the game close. Heppner scored two more runs to take a 5-2 lead while se- nior Toby Nation kept the Tigers quiet. Junior Carson Eyenetich took the mound to close out the game in the sixth. Heppner would end the game as they scored seven runs and forced a 10-run rule victory on the La Grande JV team. Heppner took the chance to play a JV con- test in the second game with the JV team from La Grande. Heppner faced an early 7–0 deficit and never recovered as the JV team fell 12-6. This loss does not count to the Mustangs overall varsity record. The Mustangs will take a 1-0 record into Thursday’s double header with the Baker and Powder Valley co-op varsity team. The first game will begin at 12 p.m. The softball team will also be taking on the Baker and Powder Val- ley co-op team in a double header. The first of two games will also begin at 12 p.m. at the Little League softball field.
