Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 15, 2021 -- THREE Mustang Athletics Dominate Weekend By Blake Carter Mustang athletics are officially back into full swing as all three fall sports programs completed a weekend of competition. The Mustang volleyball team traveled to Ione and won 3-1. Mustang foot- ball hosted Warrenton and grabbed the victory, 15-12, in nail biting fashion. Fi- nally, the Mustang Cross Country team traveled to Umatilla where the boys and girls team competed, with the boys highlighting a top 3 finish. Mustang volley- ball traveled to Ione in a last-minute contest due to Heppner’s weekend tour- nament being cancelled. Heppner opened the first on the losing side, 26-24. However, Heppner wasn’t going to go down easily. They quickly rebounded and won a long set two victory, 28-26. Heppner would be able to carry that momentum into sets three, and four, where they won 25-20 in both sets. The Mustangs used their defense to kick-start their rallies; the team totaled up 72 digs as a team. Katie Wilson led with 17 digs, as Dara Teeman added 12, while Zandra Master- son and Hailey Wenberg brought in 11 digs a piece. Heppner was led by Zebre- na Masterson and Serena Humphreys in kills, Mas- terson knocked down 7 kills and Humphreys add- ed 4. Coach Mindy Wilson said, “The little things are what we struggle with, but we are scrappy, and work to keep the ball in play.” The Mustangs will look towards their first league contest as they host the Grant Union Prospectors Thursday, September 16,, at 5 p.m. Mustang football re- mains undefeated as they hosted the Warrenton War- riors Saturday, September 11. Heppner opened the game on defense where they were able to stop the Warriors on third down, forcing a punt early in the first quarter. Heppner then proceeded to block the punt and recover it, starting their drive near midfield. Heppner cap- italized on the block as Landon Mitchell tossed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Zander Fisher. This score would stick until the fourth quarter when Warrenton struck again as Bodden Bodden ran in another touchdown from six yards out on the first play of the quarter to take the advantage, 12-7. Heppner however would not be denied; the Mus- tangs then got the ball and marched all the way down the field. Landon Mitch- ell then threw a beautiful pass to Kason Cimmyotti in the back right corner of the endzone to cap off the drive. Brock Hisler scored the extra point attempt to give Heppner the lead right back, 15-12. Leaving only two minutes on the clock, Warrenton rushed to score the late game winner. However, Kason Cimmi- yotti intercepted the War- rior quarterback to seal the Mustangs victory, 15-12. Heppner will look towards the Stanfield Tigers (1-1) next Friday, September 17, at 7 P.M. Mustang cross country continued to climb in Uma- tilla. The Heppner boys fin- ished as the number three team in this race, behind Hermiston and The Dalles. Trevor Nichols was able to finish third, while Ed Ells- worth and Joseph Sherman followed at 12th and 13th place. Heppner rounded out the leaderboard as Ja- cob Finch finished 23rd, Thomas Rudolf finished 33rd, and Roen Waite fin- ished 39th. The girls team also had great success as Hailey Heideman and Ky- lie Boor both added top 20 finishes. Stu- dents will participate in dress-up days and partici- pate in class competitions throughout the week in preparation for the home- coming games. A noise parade will be held at 2 p.m. this Thursday, September 16, per home- coming tradition. Heppner High students will cruise down Main Street on floats and will meet at the Sham- rock to show school spirit. Community members are encouraged to take to the sidewalks in support of our Local woman places in college golf tourney The Lewis-Clark State College Men’s and Wom- en’s Golf teams started the 2021-22 season on a solid note as both stand in the top three after the opening day of the University of British Columbia Thun- derbirds Invitational being played at Sudden Valley Golf Course. The Warrior men are in second place after the opening 36 holes of their 54-hole event, while the Warrior women are third at the halfway point of their 36-hole tourney, which serves as the first of three Cascade Collegiate Conference tournaments this season. Nicole Propheter, Heppner, finished with an 89. Top score for women was 80. Lewis and Clark ended with a team score of 336. British Columbia was first with a team score of 309.
