The scholarship com- mittee is composed of Ione residents Monica Swanson, Linda LaRue and Anne Morter, as well as, Matthew McElligott of North Pow- der, OR and Vince McElli- gott, of Houston, TX, two of Maryan’s sons. Scholarships are award- ed to students who share and demonstrate Maryan’s val- ues but may lack financial resources needed to pursue their college education. The following criteria are used to select scholarship recipients: high academic achievement; demonstrated character; community, fam- ily and school involvement; and financial need. The L.J. McElligott family initially set up the endowment fund in 1994, and it is adminis- tered by the Oregon Com- munity Foundation. The Maryan L. McElli- gott Memorial Scholarship fund makes annual awards to graduates of Ione High School who are enrolled or will be enrolled in a full- time undergraduate course of study at any accredited post-secondary institution, including out-of-state insti- tutions. Applicants, includ- ing McElligott scholarship recipients, may reapply each year as long as they meet the eligibility require- ments. NEW LISTING $210,000 Music in the park resumes Heppner First Friday begins July 2 The Heppner Outreach Council will hold their First Friday event on July 2 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. in front of the Willow Creek Water Park. The water park location is temporary due to the con- struction in the downtown area. Vendors will offer their products from 5 to 7 p.m. Children will be allowed to enjoy the fitness park and space to run as well as enjoying lots of kids’ activ- ities. The pool will be open The fund was established in her memory after she lost her battle with cancer. Maryan McElligott was an energetic community volunteer who was rec- ognized in 1992 as the Morrow County Woman of the Year. She placed a high value on community involvement. She volun- teered in the schools, the American Legion Auxiliary Ione Post 95, and was a 20- year 4-H leader. An avid baker, she was well-known for her cakes and taught cake-decorating classes through Blue Mountain Community College. Edu- cation was very important to her. Maryan and her late husband, L.J. McElligott who passed in March 2020, raised eight children, all of whom graduated from Ione High School as well as college where five have received graduate degrees. 188 W. Willow P.O. Heppner ’s Summer Music in the Park program resumes on Sunday, July 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the shade at the city park on Main Street. This month’s performers will be a group called Neymark and Sons, consisting of Joel Neymark and his sons Gabe and Eli- jah (a Heppner resident). The group is looking forward to sharing their gifts for making music with the community, in a style they refer to as “eclectic folk music flavored with campfire jam sessions.” Joel will be playing fiddle, mandolin, recorder and guitar. Gabe will be on bass and guitar and Elijah on ukulele and bass, with all three on vocals. Hopeful Saints Min- istry, facilitator of these concerts, will be offering pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw, cookie and drink for purchase by donation to their Mission and Outreach well fund. In the event of rain, be grateful (and bring your umbrella). The August 8 th concert will feature a return of The Wasteland Kings and on September 12 th , Chasing Ebenezer will be back. These events have been made possible by a gener- ous grant from the Morrow County Unified Recreation District.
