CBEC awards scholarships During this unusual time of COVID-19, Colum- bia Basin Electric (CBEC) is unable to send students on the Washington D.C. tour that they normally sponsor. Instead, CBEC has decided to award four $500 scholarships to high school juniors in their ser- vice area. Four students were selected, one from each high school in the service territory. This year’s recipients are: Kyrsten Smith from Condon, Maddie McMur- ray from Fossil, Haylie Pe- terson from Ione and Julian- na Teeman from Heppner. Kyrsten Smith is the daughter of Kelly and Greg Smith of Condon. She is active in honor society, leadership club, class presi- dent and participates in vol- leyball and tennis. Kyrsten also participates in 4-H, the Elk’s hoop shoot, plays the guitar and drums. Maddie McMurray is the daughter of Michele and Jon McMurray, Fossil. Maddie is a member of student council, national honor society and active in basketball, volleyball and track. Maddie is also involved in 4-H and canned food drives. Haylie Peterson is the daughter of Elizabeth and Treve Peterson from Ione. Haylie is involved in ten- nis, basketball, volleyball, 4-H, FFA and is on the honor roll. Haylie is also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and is an advocate of community service. Julianna Teeman is the daughter of Rosa and Eric Cayce, Heppner. Julianna is involved in cheerlead- ing, volleyball, basketball, track, drama, TSA and hon- ors chemistry. Julianna also loves to help people by mowing lawns, raking leaves, shoveling snow, dog sitting or babysitting. Her hobbies include crochet- ing, drawing, decorating, hiking, traveling and snow- mobiling. Alpha wolves found Father Condon honored dead The alpha male and female from the Heppner wolf pack were both found dead in the last month. There were no outward indications for a cause of death and both wolves were shipped to OSU. According to Steve Cherry, District Wildlife Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), Hep- pner District, “There are no signs of trauma or gunshot wounds found on either wolf. Both wolves are at OSU and waiting for results to come back on the disease and toxicology tests.” The major landown- ers in the area have been notified and ODFW will continue to monitor other wolves in the area. Scholarships available for seniors Applications are now being accepted for two scholarships that are avail- able for Heppner and Ione seniors. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on April 1 to be considered. The committee for the South Morrow County Scholarship will award scholarships to a col- lege-bound Heppner High School or Ione High School senior based on academic achievement, community involvement and financial need. Students must be continuing their education at a community college, trade school, or four-year college or university. Appli- cations will be accepted and awarded by the South Mor- row County Scholarship Inc Board of Directors using their common local schol- arship application and must include a transcript and principal/counselor evalu- ation form. The committee will accept scholarship ap- plications until April 1 at 4 p.m. All applications need to be electronically submit- ted to Brandi Sweeney at brandi.sweeney@morrow. k12.or.us. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. The Coach Del LaRue Scholarship was developed in memory of Del LaRue, a long-time teacher and coach at Ione High School. Del had a passion for coach- ing basketball and track and loved seeing students set and achieve their goals. After retiring from teach- ing, Del continued to coach track for twelve additional years. During this time, he helped many student athletes achieve their goals and was honored as national Track Coach of the Year. This fund awards one $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound Ione High School senior based on demonstrated academic achievement, community involvement and with pref- erence given to students who have participated in the Ione High School Track Program. Students must be con- tinuing their education at a community college, trade school, or four-year college or university. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 accumulated GPA, attend- ed Ione High School all four years of high school and shown involvement in community activities. Applications will be accepted and awarded by the South Morrow County Scholarship Inc Board of Directors using their com- mon local scholarship ap- plication and must include a transcript. All applicants will Heppner Ranger District offers summer job opportunities for local youth The Heppner Ranger District is recruiting four students between the ages of 15 and 18 for summer employment in the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC). Work can include noxious weed removal, fence re- moval and construction, trail maintenance, meadow restoration, campground maintenance, slash piling, marking timber, removal of tubing from tree seedlings, and fire line construction around logged units on the Heppner Ranger District. The program will last six weeks beginning June 21, 2021. Youth are paid the Oregon minimum wage rate of $11.50 per hour (effective July 1, 2021, the wage rate will increase to $12 per hour). No previous experience is required. To apply, all interested candidates must complete and submit a signed applica- tion. St. Patrick’s Church in Heppner and St. Williams Church in Ione honored their departed Parish priest, the late Father Gerald Con- don, this past weekend, a year after his passing on March 7, 2020 as Covid restrictions delayed any earlier arrangements. Bishop Liam Carey from Redmond led me- morial masses and blessed the headstone of Father Condon’s tomb at the Hep- pner Cemetery. A brunch was shared at the Gilliam Bisbee Building after the blessing. All gatherings were for parishioners only due to Covid restrictions, but a celebration open to the public will be held at a later date. A memorial mass for Father Condon was also held in Dublin, Ireland last weekend where he was originally from. DA’s Report Morrow County District Attorney Justin Nelson has released the following report: -Artie James Ray was convicted of criminal mischief in the second degree and sentenced to 45 days jail and $350 restitution to victim. He was also convicted of at- tempted theft in the second degree and sentenced to 45 days jail. -Juan Juarez Gomez was convicted of harassment and sentenced to 24 months bench probation, $500 fine, 40 hours of community service, no offensive contact with victim, drug package - substance abuse evaluation and comply with all recommended treatment, alcohol package - alcohol abuse evaluation and comply with all recom- mended treatment and anger management evaluation and comply with all recommended treatment. Shealee Kay Bailey was convicted of identity theft and sentenced to 90/30 sanction units imposed, 18 months formal probation, 160 hours of community service, no contact with victim, restitution to be determined, drug package - substance abuse evaluation and comply with all recommended treatment and alcohol package - alco- hol abuse evaluation and comply with all recommended treatment. Nominations for Town and Country event reopened Nominations for Hep- pner Chamber ’s Town and Country Community Awards event have been re- opened and will be accepted Friday, March 19 through Friday, May 14, 2021. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Annual Town and Coun- try Community Awards event previously scheduled for this year was cancelled. Heppner Chamber is now opening nominations for a rescheduled event to be be notified by mail of their selection status no later than April 23, 2021. Nominations will be accepted until May 14 to give community members time to submit nomina- tion forms for Woman of the Year, Man of the Year, Business of the Year, Cit- izen-Educator of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Youth Award.
