SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 25, 2019 More 2019 Fire Dept, Lions offer free smoke detector installation Who is this LOVELY LADY turning 80!? A recent grant from the Oregon State Fire Mar- shal’s Office to the Heppner Fire Department for instal- lation of free smoke detec- tors to anyone in the city or rural fire district. The grant allows for 10-year battery operated smoke detectors to be installed by qualified personnel. Assistant Chief Steve Rhea advises that recent fire responses have showed a lack of working smoke detectors or none at all in several cases in homes. The department felt, as a depart- ment, that they needed to promote fire safety, espe- cially during the holidays. They don’t want to respond to a fatal fire scene when it could have been prevented. The department and members of the Lions Club took a one-hour webinar required by OSFM to prop- Steve Rhea and Al Scott. -Photo by Bobbi Gordon. erly install the detectors. These units with a 10-year battery are disposable with an expiration date stamped on them. After 10 years new detectors will be installed. “I found, in taking the installation training, that my home does not have an adequate number of detec- tors,” Rhea said. There is no limit of detectors per house- hold and existing smoke detectors will be checked and new batteries installed if needed. The Lions Club is of- fering Shake and Vibrate Detector with Strobe for the hearing impaired also, free through the American Red Cross.
