The last two years the Wolverines have played in the state championship game and were the second ranked team in the OSAA 2A football rankings when the Mustangs pulled into Mill City. Heppner dom- inated the game from the start and with the victory moved up one spot in the state rankings to third. Heppner kicked off to start the game and forced a Wolverine punt. The Mus- tangs then needed only five plays to score the first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Jayden Wilson threw a 40-yard scoring pass to Jackson Lehman that got the Mustangs on the board. Blake Wolters ran in the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 8-0. On their next posses- sion, Santiam fumbled the ball and the Mustangs re- covered it near midfield. A four-play drive ended when Wilson ran the ball in from 36 yards out for the score. That made the score 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded posses- sions with each other the entire second quarter to end the half with the Mustangs leading 14-0. The Mustangs got the ball to start the second half and only needed a little over two minutes to score again. A five-play drive led to a touchdown when Wil- son scored on a run from five yards out. Wilson then threw to Jackson Lehman for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 22-0. The dominating Hep- pner defense forced anoth- er punt and the Mustang offense went on a nine- play drive that resulted in another score. Mason Lehman caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Wil- son to increase the lead to 28-0. Mason then ran in the 2-pt. conversion that made the score 30-0 as the third quarter ended. The teams traded possessions several times in the fourth quarter and the game ended with the Mustangs getting the win by the score of 30-0. Heppner had 14 first downs in the game to only one for Santiam. The Mus- tangs rushed for 217 yards and held Santiam to only 32. Heppner had 116 pass- ing yards to –1 for the Wol- verines. Total yardage for the Mustangs was 333 and for Santiam it was 31 yards. Wilson was 4-9 passing the ball for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two passes intercepted in the game. Brock Hisler ran for 20 yards and Saul Lopez finished with 16. Wolters and Hisler led the defensive effort with six tackles each. Mason Lehman finished with five tackles and Wilson had four. With three tackles each were Jackson Lehman and Roy Collins. Finishing with two tackles in the game were Kellen Grant, Gavin Hanna-Robinson, Hayden Hyatt and Jace Coe.
