Worden shoots hole in one According to prelim- inary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, tem- peratures at Heppner aver- aged slightly warmer than normal during the month of April. The average tempera- ture was 49.8 degrees which was 0.7 degrees above nor- mal. High temperatures averaged 59.9 degrees, which was 1.0 degree be- low normal. The highest was 77 degrees on the 19 th . Low temperatures averaged 39.6 degrees, which was 2.4 degrees above normal. The lowest was 29 degrees, on the 28 th . There were four days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. Rick Worden, Heppner, got a Precipitation totaled hole-in-one on hole number 2.05 inches during April, two at the Willow Creek golf course on his 40 th birthday. Heppner athletes selected by Shrine Club Heppner athletes (L-R) Derek Howard and Tyler Carter were selected to play in the annual Shrine football game. The Tri-County Shrine Club honored players Der- ek Howard and Tyler Carter on Wednesday, May 1 at the Heppner Elks Lodge. This annual recognition din- ner brings families, Shrine members and coaches to- gether to hear about the mission of the Shriners organization while recog- nizing the players selected for the game. Derek Howard is a son of Matt and Derina Howard. According to a spokesperson, “He was a great teammate and some- one who was kind to all he played with and against.” It was also said that Derek is a top track athlete with a state leading mark of 51’10”. Tyler Carter is the son of Scott and Kim Carter. Tyler was a first team all- league offensive and de- fensive player. He was a standout lineman playing center and guard. “Tyler al- ways showed up around the ball, whether in football or basketball, you could count on him being there to make plays,” was a comment April slightly warmer this year made about Tyler. Tyler was also selected as a second team All-State offensive and defensive player. Both boys were praised for how they represented their families, school and community by Coach Greg Grant. “The support of par- ents, teammates, school and community is what molded you into the person you are today,” Grant said. “Hon- or all of them with your actions,” was the message given. Each player gave a short speech thanking their parents and support of their community. Past player Wyatt Steagall was a guest speaker. He spoke pas- sionately about how the experience was much more than he imagined. “The technology of the hospital was incredible and it was so gratifying to contribute to such a great cause,” he said. Archie Ball was the master of ceremonies with visiting dignitaries Dick Christ from the Pendleton Shrine club. Tri-County shrine members Gene Or- wick, Herman Winters, Merlin Hughes and Roger Mortimore attended. Rog- er prepared his signature prime rib for the crowd. The Shrine football game will be played Au- gust 4 in Baker City, OR at 7 p.m. which was 0.54 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation, at least .01 inch, was received on 11 days with the heaviest, 0.43 inches reported on the 20 th . Precipitation this year has reached 7.62 inches, which is two inches above normal. Since October, the water year precipitation at Heppner has been 11.63 inches, which is 1.95 inches above normal. The highest wind gust was 46 mph which occurred on the 6 th . The outlook for May from NOAA’s Climate Pre- diction Center calls for above normal temperatures and below normal precip- itation. Normal highs for Heppner rise from 64.0 degrees at the start of May to 73.0 degrees at the end of May. Normal lows rise from 40.0 degrees to 47.0 de- grees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.66 inches. WCVEDG to host annual luncheon Willow Creek Valley Economic Development Group will hold their an- nual luncheon Thursday, May 16 from noon to 1 p.m. in the dining room at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. There will be an update on WCVEDG projects and programs as well as guest DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5PM speakers. Guest speakers Wendy Veliz, Brad Jenkins and Dave Rodgers from Port- land General Electric will talk about their newest project and also report on current projects. Lunch will be catered by Alvin Liu of Gateway Café and will consist of barbecued ribs, chicken, baked beans, potato salad and dessert.
