Heppner athletes selected by
Shrine Club
Heppner athletes (L-R) Derek Howard and Tyler Carter were
selected to play in the annual Shrine football game.
The Tri-County Shrine
Club honored players Der-
ek Howard and Tyler Carter
on Wednesday, May 1 at the
Heppner Elks Lodge. This
annual recognition din-
ner brings families, Shrine
members and coaches to-
gether to hear about the
mission of the Shriners
organization while recog-
nizing the players selected
for the game.
Derek Howard is a
son of Matt and Derina
Howard. According to a
spokesperson, “He was a
great teammate and some-
one who was kind to all he
played with and against.” It
was also said that Derek is a
top track athlete with a state
leading mark of 51’10”.
Tyler Carter is the son
of Scott and Kim Carter.
Tyler was a first team all-
league offensive and de-
fensive player. He was a
standout lineman playing
center and guard. “Tyler al-
ways showed up around the
ball, whether in football or
basketball, you could count
on him being there to make
plays,” was a comment
April slightly warmer this year
made about Tyler. Tyler was
also selected as a second
team All-State offensive
and defensive player.
Both boys were praised
for how they represented
their families, school and
community by Coach Greg
Grant. “The support of par-
ents, teammates, school and
community is what molded
you into the person you are
today,” Grant said. “Hon-
or all of them with your
actions,” was the message
given.
Each player gave a
short speech thanking their
parents and support of their
community. Past player
Wyatt Steagall was a guest
speaker. He spoke pas-
sionately about how the
experience was much more
than he imagined. “The
technology of the hospital
was incredible and it was so
gratifying to contribute to
such a great cause,” he said.
Archie Ball was the
master of ceremonies with
visiting dignitaries Dick
Christ from the Pendleton
Shrine club. Tri-County
shrine members Gene Or-
wick, Herman Winters,
Merlin Hughes and Roger
Mortimore attended. Rog-
