Any letters expressing thanks will be placed in the classifieds under “Card of Thanks” at a cost of $10. “Oz” performed at Ione Elementary The Ione Public Li- brary and Ione Topic Club sponsored “Dorothy in the Land of Oz” at the Ione el- ementary school on March 11. The program from the Traveling Lantern Compa- ny was performed before approximately 100 students and adults. Two members of the Traveling Lantern, Allyson and Allison, performed most of the acting parts. One played Dorothy, while the other played the scare- crow, the tin man and the rest of the main parts, with a little audience participation. Each year the library has three or more programs as part of their summer reading program for chil- dren. The Ione Topic Club chooses and pays for one program each year. Chamber Chatter Fridays, March 22 and Veterans Services and Ore- 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 gon Department of Veterans p.m. at the Heppner City Affairs, are $10 per person. Hall, Free In-Person Tax Preparation Service. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation to any- one of any age, especially for those 50 or older or can’t afford paid tax preparation. Friday, March 29 at 5 p.m., Community-Wide Salute to Veterans Dinner at Stokes Landing (Irrigon Senior Center) to show your appreciation to those who have served in the military. Tickets may be purchased at City of Boardman, City of Irrigon and local branches of Bank of Eastern Oregon. The tickets for this event, hosted by the Irrigon Senior Center, Morrow County Morrow County Health District’s Community Ben- efit Fund awarded $5,200 to Community Counseling Solution’s SPURS (Stu- dents Providing Under- standing and Respectful Support) Program that pro- vides peer mentoring to students struggling with mental health issues. SPURS works to iden- tify depression and other mental health diagnoses in adolescents to ensure appro- priate referrals and improve the health and well-being of youth in Morrow Coun- ty. The program employs high school students to Students in the Heppner FFA Chapter have taken on responsibilities for support of the Backpack Project this year. The Backpack Project allows kids in need to take home backpacks of food for the weekend when they are unable to receive food at the schools. Anyone who is in need can sign up for a backpack, from elementary to high school students. The FFA students pack backpacks with two or three breakfast and lunch meals, a can of fruit, a can of veg- etables and six snacks per child. Also included in their job is pick up and delivery to the elementary school, manage food inventory and educate students on nutri- tional meals by holding workshops. Two workshops have been held so far this school year and there are plans to do one more later this spring. The workshops show the kids how to make a proper nutritional meal for themselves as well as their A number of students participated in the Taco Make ‘n Take families. They also took a bag home Prayer team to meet The Heppner Prayer Team will meet Wednesday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the SDA Church on Minor Street. The topic will be “Prayer and Trust” and the community prayer fo- cus will be for Heppner and Ione Middle and High School teachers, staff and students. For additional infor- mation or prayer requests, contact the prayer team at heppnerprayerteam@ gmail.com. with all the fixings to make tacos at home. Everyone is invited to participate in the workshops whether they participate in the backpack program or not. The Backpack Project identified a need in the community and has been working to help fulfill this need. Various, generous donations have been re- ceived from Willow Creek Economic Development, DPR Construction, Na- tional FFA, The Carlson Family, Breaking Bread, Van Schoiak Ranch, Dick- enson’s, Triangle Ranches, Heppner FFA Chapter, Mor- row County Grain Growers, Land O’ Lakes and more. The donations have helped grow the Backpack Project tremendously. Currently over 900 weekend meals have been provided, which includes everything within a backpack for one child, and have fed an average of 40 kids every week. An animal nutrition class sponsored by Morrow County Grain Growers and CHS Nutrition was held for all Morrow County 4-H and FFA members who are raising show animals last Friday. Ryan Corta, CHS nutri- tionist and Jamie Helfrecht, MCGG Green Feed manag- er hosted the event for 50 students and their families to learn more about feed- ing their animals for show performance.
