Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 30, 2019 -- EIGHT JV boys extend winning streak The Heppner Mustang JV boys’ basketball team extended their winning streak to nine games with a pair of victories over the weekend. The JV Mustangs beat the Stanfield Tigers 70-34 and then traveled to John Day and defeated the Grant Union Prospectors by the score of 46-26. Against the Tigers, Heppner started the game with Casey Fletcher hitting three consecutive three pt. baskets to give the team a quick lead. The Mus- tangs played at a fast pace throughout the rest of the quarter and led 20-6 as the second quarter started. The Tigers put in one of their varsity sharpshooters and he lit up the scoreboard for 13 points in the quarter by himself. The Mustangs were outscored 19-13 in the quarter but they led at half- time by the score of 33-25. As they often do, the Mustangs turned up the de- fensive pressure in the sec- ond half and frustrated the Tiger offense. Heppner held Stanfield to only nine points the entire second half while the Mustangs scorched the home nets for 37. All 11 Heppner players on the roster got time in the game and nine of them scored. The Mustangs rolled to the win by the score of 70-34. Leading the way for the team was Roy Collins with 16. Casey Fletcher had 14 and Kannon Wilkins finished with 10. Scoring eight points in the game was Jackson Lehman and Brock Hisler had seven. Gavin Hanna-Robinson and Kellen Grant each fin- ished with six points while Joe Sherman had two and Jorden Sweeney one point in the game. After the long bus ride to John Day, the Mustangs started the game out a little slow as they trailed the Prospectors at the end of the first quarter 14-11. A much better second quarter for the Mustangs saw them score 18 points and hold Grant Union to only six points to give Heppner the lead at halftime 29-20. An outstanding defen- sive effort in the third quar- ter by the Mustangs held Grant Union to only two points. The Mustangs got 10 for themselves and led at the end of the third 39-22. Grant Union could only score four points in the final quarter while the Mustangs got seven and the win by the score of 46-26. Collins and Lehman led the team in scoring with 10 each. Hanna-Robinson was next with seven and with six each were Sweeney and Hisler. Wilkins scored three and finishing with two each were Grant and Fletcher. The Lady Mustangs basketball team continued their stellar season with weekend wins over Stan- field and Grant Union. On Friday the Mustangs hosted the Stanfield Tigers. The girls had a strong start and never looked back. Despite the efforts of the Tigers to get back in the game, the Mustangs never gave up the lead and finished with a strong fourth quarter to seal the deal with a 62-50 win. The team was led by sophomore Sydney Wil- son’s 19 points, who is averaging almost 18 points per game. Jacee Currin Day to take on the league leading Grant Union Pros- pectors. The Prospectors were undefeated in league play and ranked fourth in state, but that didn’t stop the Mustangs from securing a decisive road win. The ladies had a slow start being down 8-0 after two minutes of play. From that point on it was all the Mustangs who dominated the remainder of the game building a lead as large as 21 points. The Prospectors tried to make a run but they were no match for the Mustangs who posted a 63-52 victory. Coach Wilson said that the girl’s defense against Grant Union’s top scorers was one of the keys to success. Leading the way for the Mustangs was Sydney Wilson with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Senior Jacee Currin netted 14 points, along with six assists and five rebounds. Madison Combe was just shy of a double double with nine points and nine rebounds. Madelyn Nichols had seven points and a great defensive effort. Jenna McCullough had five points and Madison Ashbeck with four. Makayla Silvia and Marlee Mitchell again pro- vided punishing defense on the Prospector’s top scorers holding them in check. Up next for the Mus- tangs is back to back road games this weekend against Enterprise, ranked seventh in the state, and Union. One victory will secure them a spot in the district tourna- ment. Go Lady Mustangs. Carson Brosnan vs Caden Fisher of Echo. -Photo by Kirsti Cason. The Heppner/Ione wrestling team traveled to John Day last weekend to compete in the Grant Union tournament. Carson Brosnan placed first in his weight class, earning 18 team points. In their respective weight classes, Jacob Wallace earned a second; Jace Coe, Roen Waite and Conor Brosnan placed third; Su- zanneah Cason was fourth and Charles Cason was fifth. The team will compete in the BEO Invitational tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. JV girls’ having a great season chipped in with 16 points, Madison Combe with 12, Madison Ashbeck eight, Madelyn Nichols four, Zabrena Masterson two, and Jenna McCullough with one point. Jenna Mc- Cullough led the team with nine rebounds while Jacee Currin had four assists and three steals. The combined defense of Madelyn Nich- ols, Marlee Mitchell and Makayla Silvia shut down Stanfield’s top scorer Ken- dra Hart, allowing her only one point in the second half. Currently with a 12-6 record, the girls continue to improve. The young team is comprised of five sophomores and four freshman who have really learned to play well togeth- er. After convincing 40 plus point victories over Pilot Rock and Weston-McEwen, this weekend the girls had two tough games. On Friday, the girls played visiting Stanfield. After a slow start the girls rallied to a convincing 48- 36 victory. A balanced scor- ing attack proved to be the key with sophomore Sage Ferguson leading the way with 16 points. Oth- er scorers included Kay- la McAninch with eight, Marlee Mitchell and Kylie Boor with five each, Ken- nisyn Wilkins and Aubrey Rodriquez each had four, while Hannah Finch and ZaBrena Masterson tallied three points each. On Saturday, the girls traveled to take on the Grant Union Prospectors. This proved to be a battle the whole game. The Mustangs trailed the entire way until Marlee Mitchell drained a buzzer beater 3 three-point shot to push the game into overtime. The overtime period remained intense but in the end Grant Union edged out the Mustangs. Leading the scoring for the Mustangs was freshman ZaBrena Masterson with 17 points. Kylie Boor had eight Marlee Mitchell five, Sage Ferguson four, and Hannah Finch and Kenni- syn Wilkins each had one point. Up next for the girls are away games this week- end against Enterprise and Union, finishing the season next Tuesday with a home game against Pilot Rock.
