JV boys extend winning streak
The Heppner Mustang
JV boys’ basketball team
extended their winning
streak to nine games with
a pair of victories over the
weekend. The JV Mustangs
beat the Stanfield Tigers
70-34 and then traveled to
John Day and defeated the
Grant Union Prospectors by
the score of 46-26.
Against the Tigers,
Heppner started the game
with Casey Fletcher hitting
three consecutive three pt.
baskets to give the team
a quick lead. The Mus-
tangs played at a fast pace
throughout the rest of the
quarter and led 20-6 as the
second quarter started. The
Tigers put in one of their
varsity sharpshooters and
he lit up the scoreboard
for 13 points in the quarter
by himself. The Mustangs
were outscored 19-13 in the
quarter but they led at half-
time by the score of 33-25.
As they often do, the
Mustangs turned up the de-
fensive pressure in the sec-
ond half and frustrated the
Tiger offense. Heppner held
Stanfield to only nine points
the entire second half while
the Mustangs scorched the
home nets for 37. All 11
Heppner players on the
roster got time in the game
and nine of them scored.
The Mustangs rolled to the
win by the score of 70-34.
Leading the way for
the team was Roy Collins
with 16. Casey Fletcher
had 14 and Kannon Wilkins
finished with 10. Scoring
eight points in the game
was Jackson Lehman and
Brock Hisler had seven.
Gavin Hanna-Robinson
and Kellen Grant each fin-
ished with six points while
Joe Sherman had two and
Jorden Sweeney one point
in the game.
After the long bus ride
to John Day, the Mustangs
started the game out a little
slow as they trailed the
Prospectors at the end of the
first quarter 14-11. A much
better second quarter for the
Mustangs saw them score
18 points and hold Grant
Union to only six points to
give Heppner the lead at
halftime 29-20.
An outstanding defen-
sive effort in the third quar-
ter by the Mustangs held
Grant Union to only two
points. The Mustangs got
10 for themselves and led
at the end of the third 39-22.
Grant Union could only
score four points in the final
quarter while the Mustangs
got seven and the win by the
score of 46-26.
Collins and Lehman led
the team in scoring with 10
each. Hanna-Robinson was
next with seven and with
six each were Sweeney and
Hisler. Wilkins scored three
and finishing with two each
were Grant and Fletcher.

The Lady Mustangs
basketball team continued
their stellar season with
weekend wins over Stan-
field and Grant Union. On
Friday the Mustangs hosted
the Stanfield Tigers. The
girls had a strong start and
never looked back. Despite
the efforts of the Tigers to
get back in the game, the
Mustangs never gave up
the lead and finished with a
strong fourth quarter to seal
the deal with a 62-50 win.
The team was led by
sophomore Sydney Wil-
son’s 19 points, who is
averaging almost 18 points
per game. Jacee Currin
Day to take on the league
leading Grant Union Pros-
pectors. The Prospectors
were undefeated in league
play and ranked fourth in
state, but that didn’t stop
the Mustangs from securing
a decisive road win. The
ladies had a slow start being
down 8-0 after two minutes
of play. From that point on
it was all the Mustangs who
dominated the remainder
of the game building a
lead as large as 21 points.
The Prospectors tried to
make a run but they were
no match for the Mustangs
who posted a 63-52 victory.
Coach Wilson said that the
girl’s defense against Grant
Union’s top scorers was one
of the keys to success.
Leading the way for
the Mustangs was Sydney
Wilson with 24 points, 11
rebounds and three assists.
Senior Jacee Currin netted
14 points, along with six
assists and five rebounds.
Madison Combe was just
shy of a double double
with nine points and nine
rebounds. Madelyn Nichols
had seven points and a great
defensive effort. Jenna
McCullough had five points
and Madison Ashbeck with
four. Makayla Silvia and
Marlee Mitchell again pro-
vided punishing defense on
the Prospector’s top scorers
holding them in check.

The Lady Mustangs
JV team is having a very
strong season. Currently
with a 12-6 record, the girls
continue to improve. The
young team is comprised
of five sophomores and four
freshman who have really
learned to play well togeth-
er. After convincing 40 plus
point victories over Pilot
Rock and Weston-McEwen,
this weekend the girls had
two tough games.
On Friday, the girls
played visiting Stanfield.
After a slow start the girls
rallied to a convincing 48-
36 victory. A balanced scor-
ing attack proved to be
the key with sophomore
Sage Ferguson leading the
way with 16 points. Oth-
er scorers included Kay-
la McAninch with eight,
Marlee Mitchell and Kylie
Boor with five each, Ken-
nisyn Wilkins and Aubrey
Rodriquez each had four,
while Hannah Finch and
ZaBrena Masterson tallied
three points each.
On Saturday, the girls
traveled to take on the Grant
Union Prospectors. This
proved to be a battle the
whole game. The Mustangs
trailed the entire way until
Marlee Mitchell drained a
buzzer beater 3 three-point
shot to push the game into
overtime. The overtime
period remained intense
but in the end Grant Union
edged out the Mustangs.
Leading the scoring for the
Mustangs was freshman
ZaBrena Masterson with
17 points. Kylie Boor had
eight Marlee Mitchell five,
Sage Ferguson four, and
Hannah Finch and Kenni-
syn Wilkins each had one
point.
Up next for the girls
are away games this week-
end against Enterprise and
Union, finishing the season
next Tuesday with a home
game against Pilot Rock.
