SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 25, 2017 Mustangs win championship The Heppner Mustang football team won the Co- lumbia Basin Conference championship with a con- vincing 44-15 victory over the Stanfield Tigers. It was a cold and windy night, but that didn’t stop the Mus- tangs from dominating the Tigers and claiming the title. With the win, Heppner clinched their 21st consecu- tive state playoff berth. Heppner scored on their first possession of the game. An 11 play, 51 yard drive finished when quarterback Jayden Wilson scored on a six yard run. Beau Wolters carried the ball in for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 8-0 lead. Stanfield got the ball and looked as though they would score on their first drive. It was stopped when Wilson intercepted a Tiger pass at the four-yard line. The Mustangs then drove the length of the field for another score. This ten play, 96 yard drive resulted in a touchdown when Coby Dougherty blasted through the line and raced 34 yards for the score. Dougherty then caught a Wilson pass for the two-conversion to give the Mustangs a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter. The teams traded pos- sessions and then the Mus- tangs took over from near midfield. A 25-yard run by Wilson followed by a 13- yard run from Dougherty set up a one yard plunge by Wilson for another touch- down. The point after try was no good and the Mus- tangs now led 22-0. Stan- field did score right before the half to make the score 22-6 at the intermission. The first time that Hep- pner had the ball in the second half they scored again. A short five play drive ended with another touchdown when Wilson ran the ball in from nine Jayden Wilson hands the ball off to Coby Dougherty dur- ing the Mustangs game against Stanfield on October 20th. yards out. Gavin Hanna Robinson scored the two- point conversion to give the Mustangs a 30-6 lead. The bend but don’t break Heppner defense got the ball back near mid-field. It took the offense only six plays to score when Wilson hit Dougherty with a screen pass that he carried in for the score from 29 yards out. Wolters scored the two- point conversion on a run up the middle. That made the score 38-6 at the end of the third quarter. The Heppner defense forced another Stanfield punt and the Mustangs drove the ball 80 yards for a score. A nine play drive ended when Dougherty scored from one yard out. The PAT was no good and it was now 44-8 in favor of the Mustangs. Stanfield did score a touchdown late in the game to make the final score 44-15. Heppner ran the ball for 284 yards and Stanfield 209. Passing yards for the Mustangs was 79 and Stan- field had 28. Total yardage for the Mustangs was 363 and Stanfield had 237. Wilson led the team in rushing with 115 on 12 at- tempts. Dougherty picked up 108 yards on 18 carries and Beau Wolters gained 53 on ten runs from scrim- mage. Hanna Robinson finished with five rush- ing yards while Kannon Wilkins and Blake Wolters each gained one yard for the Mustangs. Wilson was 6-10 pass- ing the ball for 79 yards and a touchdown. He also had one pass intercepted. Dougherty led the team in receiving with one catch for 29 yards and a touch- down. Beau Wolters caught two balls for 22 yards and Hanna Robinson had two catches for 19 yards. Logan Burright had one catch in the game for nine yards. Jason Rea led the de- fense with 13 tackles. Der- ek Howard was next with seven and Hanna Robinson finished with five. With four tackles each were Wyatt Steagall, Dakota Howard, Matt Orem, Keegan Gibbs and Tyler Carter. Carter also intercepted a pass in the game. Dougherty and Charles Cason had three tackles each for the Mus- tangs. Finishing the game with two tackles each were Beau Wolters, Wilkins, Nate Maret, Roy Collins and Kellen Grant. With one tackle each were Peyton Lehman, Kevin Smith and Wilson. Wilson also had an interception in the game. This Friday the Mus- tangs have their final regu- lar season game at home. It is a non-conference match- up with the 4A Corbett Cardinals. The Mustangs (18-8) beat the Pilot Rock Rockets on their home floor to secure the berth. They then lost to the Culver Bulldogs in the district championship match. Heppner beat the Rock- ets in straight sets 25-21, 28-26, 25-22 to advance to state. It was an excit- ing match that was close throughout. A large and loud group of Mustang fans packed the gym and cheered on their team wild- ly. It appeared that there were more Heppner fans in the building than there were fans of the hometown Rockets. In the first set with Pilot Rock, the score was tied at 7-7. It was back and forth until the Mustangs took it out to a 13-10 lead. The Rockets battled back to tie the score at 14-14. Heppner then trailed briefly until tak- ing the lead for good at 19- 18. The Mustangs battled until the end and got the win 25-21. The second set was as exciting as it can get. Heppner was down big at the start and finally tied the score at 9-9. They then again trailed the Rockets until taking the lead 14-13. The Mustangs continued to lead the set until the Rock- ets tied the score 21-21. Heppner then went down by 1 point but battled back to tie it. They did that sev- eral more times until they got ahead 25-24. Heppner couldn’t put the Rockets away and then trailed Pi- lot Rock 25-26. Heppner fought back to tie the score and then take the lead 27- 26. The Mustangs then secured the final point and won the set 28-26 as the crowd went wild. The third and final set was the closest of them all. Neither team led by more than two points until the very end. There were six ties and three lead changes in the set. The teams were last tied at 20-20 and that’s when the Mustangs took control. They stretched the lead out and won the set 25-22. Madison Combe was a perfect 16-16 serving. Sophie Grant was 19-20 and Sydney Wilson 12-13. Wilson led the team with 27 digs and Morgan Correa had ten. Grant let the team with 12 assists and Jacee Currin had nine. Correa tal- lied nine kills in the match and Jenna McCullough had six kills and three blocks for the Mustangs. The win put the Mus- tangs in the championship match against the number one ranked team in the state, the Culver Bulldogs. Heppner had defeated the Bulldogs once in confer- ence play and was tied with them in the final league standings. A tie breaker put the Bulldogs as the number one seed at the district tour- nament. Culver came out strong and stayed that way for the entire match. They were fresh as they had not played yet and the Mustangs had just finished a tough and emotionally draining match. Culver took control of the first set after a 2-2 tie and pushed their lead out and eventually won 25-15. In set number two, after a brief 2-1 Heppner lead, Culver took control and led the rest of the way and won the set 25-16. The third and final set saw the Mus- tangs really challenge the Bulldogs and even tie the score two times. The last time was at 13-13. It stayed close for the remainder of the set but the Bulldogs would eventually win the set 25-21. Sophie and Madison were both 7-7 serving the ball for the Mustangs. Claire Grieb was also per- fect from the service line going 2-2. Sydney was kept busy on defense as she recorded 38 digs in the match. Morgan had 13 digs and Sophie recorded 11. Sophie also had five assists for the team while Jacee tallied three. Morgan led the team in kills with three and Jenna and Nicole Propheter each had two. Morgan and Jenna both had four blocks in the match and Tresslyn McCurry finished with two. The second place fin- ish at district means that the Mustangs will play on Saturday, Oct. 28 at a place and time that is yet to be determined. If they can win that match they will head to the State Tournament in Redmond on Nov. 3-4. 4-H fair results continue manship, Beef Showmanship, Sr, Blue, Herdsmanship, Beef (Required), Herdsmanship Beef (required for all beef exhibitors), Blue, Livestock Judging, Livestock Judging, Senior, Blue, Photography, Architectural, Sr, Blue, CH, Photography, Landscape, Sr, Blue, Photography, Special Effects, Sr, Blue, CH, Simmons, Sierra, Dairy Goat Breeds, Nubian, Sr Doe Kid, Blue, RCH, Dairy Goat Showmanship, 4-H Dairy Goat Showmanship, Jr, Blue, Herdsmanship - Small Animal (Required), Herdsmanship, Small Animal (required by all small animal exhibitors), Blue, Meat Goat Market, Market Goat, Blue, CH, Meat Goat Showmanship, Meat Goat Showmanship, Jr, Blue, Smith, Aubrey, Cloth- ing and Sewing, Basic Skills Level 1 - Creativity, Jr., Blue, Clothing and Sewing, Basic Skills Level 1 - Garment with casing and crotch seam, Jr., Blue, Clothing and Sewing, Basic Skills Level 1 - Items for the home, Jr., Blue, Cloth- ing and Sewing, Basic Skills Level 1 - Toy or Non-garment, Jr, Blue, Clothing and Sew- ing, Beginner Button Sewing Contest (county only), Blue, CH, Clothing and Sewing, Hands for Larger Service, Jr., Blue, FCS Skill-a-thon, FCS Skill-a-thon, Beginner Team (county only), Blue, Smith, Grace, Fashion Revue, Fashion Revue, Jr (county only), Blue, CH, Fash- ion Revue, Fashion Revue, Ready to Wear, Jr (county only), Blue, CH, Fashion Revue, My Favorite Outfit, Jr (county only), Blue, RCH, Sowards, Brinley, Feed- er Swine, Feeder Swine 4H, Blue, Herdsmanship, Swine (Required), Herdsmanship, Swine (required for all swine exhibitors), Blue, Livestock Judging, Livestock Judging, Beginner, Blue, Swine Show- manship, Swine Showman- ship, Jr, Blue, Herdsmanship, Swine (Required), Herdsman- ship, Swine (required for all swine exhibitors), Blue, Sowards, Brody, Live- stock Judging, Livestock
