Alvarez plead guilty to Manslaughter in the Second Degree and was sentenced to an enhanced sentence of 100 months to the Depart- ment of Corrections. District Attorney Justin Nelson stated, “A settle- ment conference is an op- portunity to bring all par- ties together to see if a settlement can be reached in a case. Both sides meet separately with the settle- ment judge in private to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of a case and consider the potential out- come and sentence at trial. The settlement judge also meets with family members of both parties, and some law enforcement involved in the case.” During the investiga- tion it was determined that one of the primary wit- nesses in the case, the pas- senger in the vehicle that was driven by the victim, had not been forthcoming with law enforcement, and the witnesses statements changed four times during four separate interviews. During the fourth in- terview the witness ad- mitted that the victim had requested the witness come with him to confront David Alvarez at Mr. Alvarez’s residence. The victim had indicated that Mr. Alvarez had punched the victim in front of his daughter earlier in the day based upon a debt that the victim owed Mr. Alvarez. The victim further requested that witness bring his handgun since he knew Mr. Alvarez also carried a firearm and had threatened him in the past. The witness informed the officers that after the shooting of the vic- tim and the vehicle crash- ing that he hid the firearm, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia behind the glove box in the truck. A second search of the ve- hicle recovered the firearm, drugs, and paraphernalia. Taking into account these and other strengths and weaknesses of the case, the State believed that reso- lution of the case with this sentence was in the best interest of justice. Dur- ing the entire settlement conference the DA’s of- fice met with the family of the victim and requested their feedback on all nego- tiations. While many of the family indicated they would like to see Mr. Alvarez spend the rest of his life in jail, they also understood that if the case went to trial there was a possibility that Mr. Alvarez could be ac- quitted or only found guilty of Manslaughter 2 with a sentence of 75 months. and Sewing, Expanding Skills Level 4 - The car will be brought in by a hauler, and from there it is 12-hour days getting prepared for the big race. There is time to sightsee however, and one of his favorite cities so far is Toronto. “Toronto is pretty cool,” he says with a smile. Having their son part of an Indy pit crew is pretty cool also for Thomas’ mom and dad, John and Ashli Gould of Heppner. “You’re watch- ing the race and then you see your son there working on a car, and you kind of go ‘wow’ “, says John. On race day, Gould’s job is to double check and make sure the wings are bolted securely to the car, and that spare wings are at pit row and ready to go if needed. When the race starts his other job was to have tires ready to roll out to the tire guys in the pit. He also takes in the worn or “kill tires”, lets the air out and scrapes all the balancing weights off. All the worn tires are then sent back to Firestone for analysis. The engines are all Chevrolet and strictly han- dled by the Chevrolet guys. Gould says a new engine comes to the shop in a crate, and the company guys put it in. They do all the work get- ting it ready and “nobody touches the engines except the Chevrolet guys,” Gould emphasizes. The engines are required to be run for at least four races, qualifying rounds or combination of, before they can be replaced. After doing these jobs for a while, Gould learned that a new “jack man” position was coming up on another crew, however he learned there would be competition for the job. “They have a live pit stop at the shop for training purposes,” he explains. At these training pits, crews can practice doing everything to a car that is done at an actual race. Here is where the competition with two other guys, who also wanted the job, would be held. Gould came out the best and was assigned the job. To explain what a jack man does, Gould says that on Indy cars, crews do not push jacks underneath to lift the cars. The jacks are built into the underside of the car, and controlled by air pressure. The jack man’s job is to stand at the rear of the car during a pit stop, and taking a “wand”, insert it into a nozzle at the rear of the car. This nozzle shoots pressurized air into the system, and its built-in jacks lift the car, making it ready for tire changes. The tire changers, along with the fuel man, then do their work. The air is then released, the jacks brought up, and the car is ready to go. Gould says as jack man it is his job to also make sure everyone is done and out of the way before he drops the car. When asked what is the best part of the job, Gould says without hesitation he likes the technical work of making sure the wings are produced and maintained just so. When they are molded and built right they can add seconds to the cars time and benefit the whole team. “The little things make a big difference,” he says with a smile. He also adds that the underside of the carbon wing is more important than the top when it comes to air dynamics and wind flow. “The top is what everybody sees, but it’s the bottom that does all the work.” The worst part of the job? Cleaning the bits of rubber off the wings and the car after a race. “It’s every- where” he says of the small chunks of rubber that come off tires during a race. He has seen drivers with bits of rubber stuck all over their necks and equipment. And speaking of equipment, he says the fireproof suits and helmets the crews wear for safety can be “almost un- bearable” on hot days. But even with the heat, the dirt and the hard work of being a member of a racing team pit crew, you just know this young man wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. To be continued... INDY -Continued from PAGE ONE racing team and they may be needing help on that in a couple of months, so Gould went back to North Carolina without work. He then got an email asking him to come back to Texas immediately for a trial test run. On the way, however his car broke down. He got that fixed and made it to Texas where the company put him up in a hotel. At that time his interviewer said the company was putting in their own carbon depart- ment to do work on the bod- ies of the Indy style cars. On Indy cars, there are wings made out of carbon on the front of the cars. The wings are very important as they add stability to the race car and also can make a big difference in handling and speed. Gould actu- ally had some experience in this field from his high school technology class, so this helped him with his new job. “It was pretty cool and what made them want to hire me was they needed another person for their new race car in Indy,” Gould says. What’s it like to travel with a big-time Indy rac- ing team? Gould says he has been to 17 races so far, including the Indianapolis 500, and they typically ar- rive at the city by commer- cial plane on Thursday for Sunday’s race.
