She was born In Jo- seph, Oregon April 26, 1932 to father, Dorris Early Mitchell and mother, Fran- cis Crawford Parker. Both sides of her family were early pioneers to Oregon coming by wagon train in 1851 to Oregon originally settling in the Willamette valley. Both families moved from there to the Cove area in Union County and then settling in Wallowa County. Her father was a renowned horseman and horse trainer pioneering gentle training methods as opposed to “breaking” horses as the more common practice of the day. Her mother Francis was from a ranching family at Heppner, Oregon and went to Wallowa County to teach at the Hurricane Creek School near Joseph. Lorene was an only child, which was a miracle because her mother was not supposed to be able to have a child. Lorene grew up on the family ranch on “The Divide” between Little Sheep and Big Sheep Creeks toward Imnaha. She spent her early years in Joseph attending school there and hanging out with cousins from the Mitchell and Justice families. She spent time riding horses and tending to her animals. She was involved with 4-H through grade school and high school, attending sum- mer school and girls state at Oregon State University. She and her mother moved to Heppner in 1945 after the untimely passing of her father due to cancer. They lived on the fam- ily ranch belonging to her grandparents Frank and Gertrude Parker. She spent time with her Hoskins and Parker cousins. She attend- ed Heppner High School and graduated in 1950. She attended Oregon State Uni- versity on a Carl Raymond Grey Scholarship. She met George Griffith through mutual family friends and they were married on May 19, 1951 at Heppner. The cou- ple had a daughter Charlotte Rose June 24, 1952, a son Glen August 9, 1957 and twin sons Grant and Elmer on March 30, 1965 who died at birth. George and Lorene farmed at Morgan on the Griffith property. In 1957 they bought a ranch west of McDermott, NV and ranched there for a few years. They returned to Ione and bought out the family ranch where she lived un- til moving to the Geneva House care facility. While in Ju- neau, Joel worked briefly at the lo- cal Sears Joel Howard store, then Barnett as a Boil- erman on the Alaska Marine Highway Vessels, The TAKU and The Matinuska. He was on- board the Taku the night she hit the rocks. That was quite the experience for him as he spoke of it and even painted a picture of the “TAKU ON THE ROCKS”. That picture received certain ac- claim in Juneau. From there he went to work for the Juneau Doug- las School system as their lead Boiler maintenance man until his retirement. Her mother and her daughter Charlotte lived in Portland and she loved to go there and take them on trips to the beach and out to dinner when she could get away from the ranch. Being a strong independent woman she worked side by side with her husband and her son tending to the cattle and helping out moving farm equipment. It is be- lieved she probably hauled several million gallons of water to the cattle with their old water trucks. She fed the family as well as harvest crews and a long string of hired men while tending to the bookkeeping, the banking, and keeping the house. Lorene and George were heavily involved with Square Dancing for a num- ber of years, working in the state organizations and helping to put on large festi- vals. They had a great social life through that and met a lot of great people that became longtime friends. Lorene dearly loved her grandchildren, Tracy Griffith (Mund) and Jen- ny Griffith (Turner) and was able to spend time watching them play sports through grade school and high school. She also got to watch them rodeo through Jr Rodeo, High School Rodeo, and College Ro- deo. She even traveled to Fallon, NV to watch the girls compete in the High School International Finals Rodeo. She always had a smile and friendly greeting for one and all. She was a devoted and faithful friend and the best mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents Dor- ris and Francis Mitchell ,twin sons Grant and Elmer, daughter Charlotte , close cousins Gayle Justice, Clara Lee Justice (Lockhart) , and Melvin Justice. She is survived by her husband of 66 years George Griffith, son and daughter- in-law, Glen and Kelly Griffith, granddaughters Tracy Griffith (Mund) hus- band Justin, Jenny Griffith (Turner) husband Ricky and great grandson Tate Sage Turner. “She will be deeply missed but we know she is dancing in heaven with her children and her folks.” Memorial Contribu- tions can be made to Gene- va House 80580 S.
