Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 21, 2016 Leavenworth game breaks long winning streak for Mustangs Mustang junior Beau Wolters (#40) goes for an interception during Friday’s game at Leav- enworth. The Mustangs played hard but still saw their first defeat in nearly two years at the hands of the Washington team. -Photo by Kirsti Cason The Heppner Mustang football team lost its first game in nearly two years to the Cascade Kodiaks 14-6. The game was played at the Kodiaks’ school just outside of Leavenworth, WA. The beautiful setting for the game saw the field surrounded by large trees may have contributed to some of the sluggish play of the Heppner team, but they still had many chances to win the game. It was a tale of two halves as Cascade domi- nated the first half of play and the Mustangs the sec- ond half. The extra point was good and the Kodiaks led the game 7-0. Heppner was able to move the ball in the quarter but couldn’t put it in the end zone. Cascade scored again early in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass play. Again the extra point was good and they took a 14-0 lead. Heppner moved the ball better in the quarter but was unable to score and trailed 14-0 at halftime. The Mustangs ran the ball well in the third quar- ter as they had 18 running plays that gained 109 yards. Heppner finally got on the board on a double reverse play. Logan Grieb took the handoff from quarterback Kevin Smith and then gave the ball to Jake Lindsay, who scampered around the right end to score a touch- down from 23 yards out. The two-point conversion try was no good and that made the score 14-6. Heppner mounted sev- eral good drives the rest of the game but were unable to hit pay dirt again. The Mustang defense turned up the heat and didn’t let the Kodiaks get near the end zone again. Both teams traded possessions for the rest of the game before it ended with a Cascade vic- tory by the score of 14-6. For the game, Heppner had 11 first downs to 10 for Cascade.
