The View from the Green Over the Tee Cup It was an overcast day on Tuesday, July 19, for the 18 Willow Creek Country Club lady golfers who teed off for their play day. Low gross of the field went to Pat Edmundson and low net of the field to Karen Hague- wood. Pat Dougherty and Eva Kilkenny tied for least putts of the field. For Flight A, Nancy Propheter had low gross, while Karen Thompson and Corol Mitchell had low net, Tiffany Clement least putts and Corol Mitchell the long drive. For Flight B, Betty Burns had low gross, Lor- rene Montgomery low net, and Sharon Harrison least putts and long drive. For Flight C, Kathy Martin took low gross and the long drive, Bev Steagall had low net, and Kim Carl- son had least putts. For all flights, Pat Dougherty had KP in 2. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Virginia Wood and Mary Holtz. Felix H. “Pete” Schwarzin Felix H. “Pete” Schwar- zin, 80, of Heppner died Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Patrick’s Senior Center dining room. He was born Decem- ber 22, 1935 at Rex, OR near Newberg, the son of Helmut J. and Claire R. Benoist Schwarzin. The family moved to Heppner in 1951 and he graduated from Heppner High School in 1955. Pete then joined the United States Army and served for two years. Pete held many jobs throughout his life—farm hand, logger, mill worker in both Maupin and at Kinzua Pine Mills. His favorite job was working for Morrow County to help set up and run the Transfer Station near Lexington, which he did for many years. On August 28, 1965 he married Anna Tatum at Lexington. The couple made their home in Hep- pner. One of his favorite hob- bies was “scraping,” which went perfectly with his job at the transfer station; he loved finding things he could reuse or repurpose. Bob was a member of the museum board, the county road com- mittee and many local and state committees. Soon after retiring from farming and moving to Heppner, he was elected mayor. He served in that position for 12 years, from 1993 to 2004. Over the years Bob has been recognized with many awards and honors, includ- ing Conservation Man of the Year in 1970, Oregon State Father of the Year in 1972, and with Suzanne, Heppner Man and Woman of the year in 2002. Bob enjoyed spending time outdoors. He was an avid snow skier and a member of the Mazamas Mountain Climbing Club for over 15 years. He also helped teach survival skills at Tupper Outdoor School to local sixth graders. Golf was another of Bob’s fa- vorite pastimes, right up to the time of his recent illness. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. They will miss his love and his sense of humor. By the grace of God, Bob lived a long life, and he was full of life while with us. He worked and gave of his time tirelessly.
