Felix H. “Pete” Schwarzin
Felix H. “Pete” Schwar-
zin, 80, of Heppner died
Saturday, July 23, 2016 at
Pioneer Memorial Hospital.
A celebration of life will be
held on Saturday, July 30,
from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the
St. Patrick’s Senior Center
dining room.
He was born Decem-
ber 22, 1935 at Rex, OR
near Newberg, the son of
Helmut J. and Claire R.
Benoist Schwarzin. The
family moved to Heppner
in 1951 and he graduated
from Heppner High School
in 1955. Pete then joined
the United States Army and
served for two years.
Pete held many jobs
throughout his life—farm
hand, logger, mill worker in
both Maupin and at Kinzua
Pine Mills. His favorite job
was working for Morrow
County to help set up and
run the Transfer Station
near Lexington, which he
did for many years.
On August 28, 1965
he married Anna Tatum
at Lexington. The couple
made their home in Hep-
pner.
One of his favorite hob-
bies was “scraping,” which
went perfectly with his
job at the transfer station;
he loved finding things he
could reuse or repurpose.
Pete also enjoyed Bingo
and playing Mexican Train
Dominoes. In his younger
days he enjoyed fishing.

State Farm Service Agen-
cy committee. Bob was a
member of the museum
board, the county road com-
mittee and many local and
state committees. Soon
after retiring from farming
and moving to Heppner,
he was elected mayor. He
served in that position for
12 years, from 1993 to
2004.
Over the years Bob has
been recognized with many
awards and honors, includ-
ing Conservation Man of
the Year in 1970, Oregon
State Father of the Year in
1972, and with Suzanne,
Heppner Man and Woman
of the year in 2002.
Bob enjoyed spending
time outdoors. He was
an avid snow skier and a
member of the Mazamas
Mountain Climbing Club
for over 15 years. He also
helped teach survival skills
at Tupper Outdoor School
to local sixth graders. Golf
was another of Bob’s fa-
vorite pastimes, right up
to the time of his recent
illness. He especially loved
spending time with his
grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. They will
