Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 25, 2016 Morrow County announces spelling winners Thirty-one students from three counties partici- pated in the annual spelling contest sponsored by the InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) earlier this month. Students from Morrow and Uma- tilla counties participated in their county contests on May 2 at Blue Moun- tain Community College, while Union county stu- dents competed May 3 in La Grande. Morrow County win- ners were: Division 1 (irst through ifth grades)—1 st , Jackson Coiner, Heppner Elemen- tary; 2 nd , Braden Atkins, Irrigon Elementary; and 3 rd , Mylee Quilter, Windy River Elementary. Division 2 (sixth through eighth grades)—1 st , Jorden Sweeney, Heppner Jr/Sr High; 2 nd , Serenity Ro- Save the date for summer concerts Residents of Heppner and the surrounding area are reminded to hold the dates for Heppner’s Music in the Park concerts this summer. The lineup for the sum- mer is: Sunday, June 12, Steel Drum Band; Sunday, July 10, “Slipshod,” and Sunday, Aug. 14, “Jezebel’s Mother.” On Sunday, Sept. 11, “The Tailgators” will perform in honor of the 15 th anniversary of 9/11. All concerts will take place 5-7 p.m. in Heppner City Park, with an inside backup in case of rain. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs, but there will be a fundraiser meal to purchase at each event. The students who com- peted in the county com- petitions had already won a spelling contest in their division at their schools. At the county contests, students took a 35-word written test. First through third places were selected in each of the three divi- sions. An awards ceremony immediately followed, with winners receiving medals. The irst-place winner from each division is invited to participate in the state competition, which occurs on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in Salem at the Oregon State Fair. “IMESD is pleased to congratulate all of our spell- ing contest winners and would like to thank all the students who devoted time to compete this year,” said Lizette Berryessa, IMESD spelling contest coordina- tor.
