FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 25, 2016 Mustang girls bring home state golf trophy The Heppner Mustang girls’ golf team came home with a trophy from the OSAA 4A-1A State Golf Championship Tournament. The event was held on the Ridge Course at Eagle Crest Resort near Redmond, OR. The Heppner team inished in fourth place out of nine teams that competed. Hep- pner was the only 2A school that qualified this year. They had to go up against two 3A schools and six 4A teams. The Mustangs had a team score of 409 on the irst day of the tournament and only trailed third place Scappoose by four shots. Heppner had a comfortable 21-shot lead over Ontario, who sat in ifth. Leading the way for the Mustangs on day one were Sophie Grant and Amanda Rea, who both shot an 89. Madison Combe was next with a 113 and Claire Grieb came in at 118. Riane Dom- pier carded a 133. Day two saw the Hep- pner team improve their scores and inish the with a 404. Sophie had the low score for the team on the day as she shot an 88. Amanda was next with a 97 and Madison recorded a 101. Claire shot another long drive. For Flight B, Betty Burns had low gross, Judy Harris low net, Shirley Martin least putts and Pat Dougherty the long drive. For Flight C, Bev Stea- gall had low gross, Sue Edson low net, Sharon Har- rison least putts and Jackie Allstott long drive. Chip-ins were by Pat Dougherty (#15) and Nan- cy Arnson (#18). In other events, secret score went to Tiffany Clement. Amanda shot a 186 and was 16 th overall. Madison had a 214 to come in 28 th and Claire inished in 36 th place with a total of 236. Riane and Caitlyn combined for a 257 to inish 44 th . There were a total of 50 girls who played in the tournament. Kamryn Ford from St. Mary’s won the individual championship by shooting a 153. Staesha Flock from St. Mary’s inished second with a 157 and Trinity Mc- Carthy from La Grande was third with a 161. St. Mary’s of Medford won the team championship by shooting a 674. Scoring on day two was again led by Grieb, who came in with an 85. Bretsch was next with a 90. Ferguson recorded a 110 and Mitchell inished with a 115. Burright carded a 117 on the day. His two-day total of 165 put Grieb in 11 th place overall. Bretsch finished with a 188 and placed 38 th . Ferguson had a two-day total of 216 to inish in 59 th MARK YOUR CALENDAR! GREAT GIFTS FOR GRADS! Over the Tee Cup It was a warm day on May 17 for the 16 women who showed up for the ladies’ play day at Willow Creek Country Club. Low gross of the ield went to Nancy Propheter, while Pat Dougherty took low net of the ield and Lor- rene Montgomery had least putts of the ield. For flight A, Corol Mitchell took low gross, Pat Edmundson low net, Tiffany Clement least putts and Nancy Propheter the (906) and Sutherlin (971). The Mustang girls’ team had a very success- ful season this year. They won ive of six invitational tournaments in which they played around the region. They were the 4A-1A Spe- cial District 3 Champions and inished fourth at the OSAA 4A-1A State Cham- pionship. Next year could be even better as this entire group of young ladies will return to play Mustang golf. Mustang boys’ golf is third in 2A The Heppner Mustang boys’ golf team competed at the recent OSAA 3A-1A State Golf Championship held at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, OR. The team inished with a two- day total of 802 to inish in 10 th place out of the 13 teams that participated. Logan Grieb led the team in scoring on day one with an 80. Dan Bretsch came in with a 90 and Reno Ferguson was next with a 106. Burright had a total of 237 and was 68 th . There were a total of 72 golfers who played in the tournament. Josh Wu of St. Mary’s won the individual champi- onship by shooting a 146. Max Davis was second with a 147 and Dayne Miller from Creswell finished third with a 149. Cascade Christian won the team title with a score of 646. Following them were Regis (670), St. Mary’s (671), Oregon Episcopal (715), Oakridge (724), Portland Adventist (740), Blanchet Catholic (749), Taft (750), West- side Christian (784), Hep- pner (802), Burns (813), Vale (822), Nixyaawii/Pilot Rock (831). The Heppner boys’ golf team will not lose anyone to graduation this year. They will return everyone and look to improve on their success of this year. The team had one first, three second and one third- place showing at invita- tional tournaments around the area. They inished in second place at the 3A-1A Special District 3 Tourna- ment and were the third- place 2A team at the state tournament. The four freshman on this year’s team gained valuable experience and made great improvement in their games. They will be counted on to make the team even stronger next year. The future certainly does look bright for the Heppner boys’ golf team. Youth ishing derby June 4 Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife and Morrow County Parks will sponsor a free ishing derby for youth 14 and under on Saturday, June 4, at Cutsforth Park, 58430 willow Creek Rd., Heppner. Heppner athletes place at state meet Three Heppner athletes competed in the OSAA 2A Track and Field State Championships last week at Hayward Field, Eugene. With a small team on the ield, Heppner placed 21 st out of 32 men’s teams at the championship meet, but the three young men showed individual talent in each of their three events. In the 3000 Meters event Hunter Nichols placed eighth with a time of 9:50.34a. Derek Howard made an impression in the 12-pound shot put with a distance of 43-04.00, while Heppner senior Kaden Clark placed third in the long jump with a 21-05.75. Honor society inducts new members The Heppner High School branch of the National Honor Society held an induction ceremony for new members last Wednesday. Hunter Education Courses to be held June 14th, 16th, 21st and 23rd 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Heppner High School With a field day Saturday June 25th at Lexington Gun Club 8am -12 noon Any person under 18 who wishes to hunt must pass this course in order to acquire a hunting license in the State of Oregon. Any person wishing to hunt out of state must also hold a valid Hunter Education Card. The course is being taught by Jim and Darlene Marquardt.
