FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 20, 2016 Mustangs take irst, second at Big River Last week the Heppner girls’ golf team traveled to the La Grande Girls Invita- tional. Taking irst place in the event was Hermiston with a 404. La Grande followed with a 434 and Heppner inished in third by shooting a 460. Baker (462) and Enterprise (512) also competed at the tour- nament. Amanda Rea had another good day as she finished in second place overall by shooting an 89. Other scores for the Mus- tangs were Madison Combe (110), Riane Dompier (120) and Caitlyn Scrivner (141). Both Mustang golf teams competed at the Hermiston High School Small School Invitation- al held at Big River Golf Course. The Heppner girls shot a 464 on the day to inish irst. They were followed by Enterprise with a 511 and the Pendleton JV team, which shot a 521. Once again Amanda Rea took home irst place medalist honors by shooting a 92 to top the field. Madison Combe finished in third place overall by shooting a 113. Other scores for the Mustang girls were Riane Dompier (122), Caitlyn Scrivner (137) and Claire Grieb (142). The Mustang boys’ golf team found itself only ive strokes out of first place at the end of the day. The Nixyaawii/Pilot Rock team took irst with a 378. Echo was next with a 381 and Heppner inished in third by shooting 383. The Mus- tangs finished comfort- ably ahead of Pendleton JV (392), Hermiston JV (396), Grant Union (396), Wallowa (410), Enterprise (416) and Imbler (457). Logan Grieb was the irst place medalist for the tournament by shooting an 82. Other scores for Hep- The View from the Green Over the Tee Cup Sixteen women participated in the April 12 ladies’ play day at Willow Creek County Club. Weather condi- tions for the group were cool and breezy. Low gross of the ield went to Corol Mitchell. Tiffany Clement took low net of the ield and Della Heideman had least putts. For light A, Pat Edmondson took low gross. For light B, Judy Harris took low gross, Betty Burns low net and Sharon Harrison least putts. For light C, Be Steagall had low gross, Karen Hague- wood low net and Kris Lindner least putts. In other events, Barb Collin had most putts. Columbia-Blue results for The Dalles Thirty-one Columbia-Blue Senior Golf Association members from Willow Creek Country Club played in extremely windy conditions at the par-71 The Dalles Country Club golf course on April 11. The next Columbia-Blue tournament will be at Wil- low Creek Country Club on May 9 with tee-offs at 7 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Food service will be provided by the Willow Creek ladies and will include breakfast sandwiches for early arrivals and soup, bread and pie for midday lunch for nominal fees. WCCC Sunday men’s play results pner were Dan Bretsch, who shot a 93, while Reno Ferguson carded a 99 and Cason Mitchell finished with a 109. Ethan Hol- mgren (110), Charles Cason (112) and Logan Burright (114) also competed. A total of 49 boys participated in the tournament. The next match for both teams is this Friday when they travel to Union to par- ticipate in the Buffalo Peak Invitational. Twenty-six men participated in the par-three tourna- ment at Willow Creek Country Club on Sunday, April 17. It was a special day for Delbert Binschus, who got a hole in one. The results are as follows: Gross—1 st /2 nd (tie), Duane Disque and Dave Pranger, 63; 3 rd , Erin Mason, 64. Net—1 st , John Edmundson, 49; 2 nd /3 rd (tie), Delbert Binschus/Rod Wilson, 52. Special Events—KP #2/15, Erin Mason 7’11”; KP #8/17, Scott Burright 11’4”; KP #9/18, John Edmundson 8’7”. Sunday, April 24, is the annual Heppner Mustang Scramble. Greg Grant and his golf team will host the three-person event. Community lunch menu Heppner students look for the winning strategy in state chess tournament Heppner Church of the Nazarene volunteers will serve lunch on Wednesday, April 27, at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. Lunch will include baked chicken with orange sauce, rice pilaf, mixed vegetables, Waldorf salad, hot rolls, and strawberry mousse. Milk is served at each meal. Suggested donation is $3.50 per meal. Menu is subject to change. Nine students from Heppner Elementary School qualiied for the state Chess for Success Tournament in Portland, OR on April 9-10. Forty teams participated in the team competition on Friday, with 275 youth in the individual competition on Saturday. The kindergarten through fifth grade team competition was one for the record books this year because of the high num- ber of teams competing. Heppner’s kindergarten through ifth team consisted of Paul Lindsay, Ty Boor, Jacob Finch, John Lind- say, Nickolas Wenberg and Claire Lindsay. Each team competes against four play- ers from another school; whichever team wins the most games wins the match. There is also a possibility of a tie, which gives a team half a point. HES won two out of their ive matches on Friday. Paul Lindsay won four of his ive games dur- ing team play. Roen Waite, Hannah Finch and Felix Matthew competed at the sixth through eighth level on Saturday for an individual title. “The competition was challenging, to say the least,” says chess advi- sor Mary Ann Elguèzabal. “Many of the players com- peting have chess tutors and take their chess games as seriously as Heppner High School takes its football games!” Paul Lindsay, Jacob Finch and John Lindsay qualiied for the individual competition. Each team member played ive games on Saturday. This year an anony- mous donor helped tremen- dously. Alongside unpaid staff of Deb Campbell, Sherry Matteson, Brandi Sweeney and Mary Ann El- guèzabal, the group also had a team of dedicated volun- teers in Wayne Seitz, Dick Jones, Joe Jones, Tomàs Elguèzabal and many oth- ers who gave their time. Elguèzabal says the club is already looking forward to next year, and to inding those chess players who will qualify for the Chess for Success state tournament.
