Roen Waite, Hannah
Finch and Felix Matthew
competed at the sixth
through eighth level on
Saturday for an individual
title.
“The competition was
challenging, to say the
least,” says chess advi-
sor Mary Ann Elguèzabal.
“Many of the players com-
peting have chess tutors and
take their chess games as
seriously as Heppner High
School takes its football
games!”
Paul Lindsay, Jacob
Finch and John Lindsay

do an even better job next
year.”
Elguèzabal added that
on the way home the play-
ers were talking about their
favorite part of the tourna-
ment, and some quotes
include, “Even when I lost,
I learned something,” “I
liked winning,” and “The
opponents were always
nice.”
Chess Mates is fund-
ed through donations and
staffed entirely by volun-
teers. This year an anony-
mous donor helped tremen-
dously. Alongside unpaid
staff of Deb Campbell,
Sherry Matteson, Brandi
Sweeney and Mary Ann El-
guèzabal, the group also had
a team of dedicated volun-
teers in Wayne Seitz, Dick
Jones, Joe Jones, Tomàs
Elguèzabal and many oth-
ers who gave their time.
Elguèzabal says the
club is already looking
forward to next year, and to
inding those chess players
who will qualify for the
Chess for Success state
tournament.
