FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 30, 2016 Grifith honored at historical society spring meeting Morrow County His- torical Society members met March 13 at the Ir- rigon Baptist Church. A highlight of the 2016 spring quarterly meeting was the presenting of an honorary membership award to Ione veteran George Grifith by past county judge Louis Carlson. Griffith was awarded a plaque designating him as an honorary member of the Morrow County His- torical Society. Grifith has spent his life dedicated to the preservation of Mor- row County history. The Morrow County Historical Society honored Grifith for his service to his country as well as for his active in- volvement in his local Mor- row County communities of Cecil, Morgan and Ione. Griffith served his country as a Marine during World War II. For those in attendance at the ceremony, Grifith shared his candid experience of the battle fought on Iwo Jima. He witnessed the raising of the irst American lag on Mt. Suribachi by his fellow Ma- rines of the East Company 2 nd Battalion, 28 th on Feb. 23, 1945. This historic moment was captured in photo- graph by Joe Rosenthal, and Grifith attested to its perfect likeness, as he was able to see the monument in Washington D.C. as a participant in the Honor Flight program. In other business, April 15 is the date of a tour to the Columbia Gorge Discov- ery Center and Museum. SHEEP DOG TRIALS -Continued from PAGE ONE dedication and coordination also were included in the event on Sunday, the mood was solemn. Everyone was concerned for Mohney. No one knew what the future of the sheep trials event in Heppner would be. Past coordinators stepped up to take charge of the organization for this year, and members of the St. Patrick’s Committee said they felt it important to take time during the event this year to recognize Mohney for her love, past of the Heppner Sheep Dogs Trials. For that reason, a plaque was presented in memory of Mohney to her mother, Meredith Huwe. The sheep dog participants and coordinators also pre- sented Huwe with a plaque in what observers said was a “very emotional moment.” Alita Nelson’s 4-H group, The Barnyarders, have been working the event by releasing the sheep for the past 14 years. On June 25, society mem- bers will travel to French- town, west of Walla Walla, WA. Following the general gathering of Frenchtown Society members, Sam Pambrun will lead a special tour for Morrow County Historical Members and friends. Details of the tour will be discussed at the June 5 historical society meeting. Shannon Hill, Editor of 2016 Morrow County Chronicles, is asking for submission of historical articles to be printed in the 2016 edition. Stuart Dick, histori- cal society member and author, will give a special talk on his latest book at the Irrigon Public Library on April 26. The talk will begin at 7 p.m., and is also an opportunity to explore the new Irrigon library. The purpose of the Morrow County Historical Society is to gather, pre- serve and make available museum, library and other historical material relating to the history of Morrow County. Morrow County residents and all interested public are invited to attend Morrow County Historical Society activities. Atten- dance at meetings is free. Those purchasing an annual membership for $5 receive advance notice of all ac- tivities and priority reserva- tions for the tours. The 2016 Morrow County Historical Society annual meeting is currently scheduled for Oct. 2. The meeting location has not been determined at this point. FACEBOOK . COM /T HE L ANDING L ODGE During its March 1 meeting, the Boardman City Council approved res- olutions for an increase in the city’s water and sewer rates. The city’s garbage rates will remain the same. The rate increase is due to future improvements to the city’s water and sewer sys- tem. This is the irst water and sewer rate increase since 2008. The water rates relect an increase only in the base rate. Overage rates will remain the same. All water base rates will increase by $1.50. This brings the residential water rate to $16.50 for the first 7000 gallons used in a month, the Commercial and Hydrant Meter base rates to $20.50 for the irst 8000 gallons used in a month, the School Water rate to $11.25 for the irst 6000 gallons used in a month and Outside City Limits water rate to $24 for the irst 7000 gallons used in a month. The sewer rates will increase by a $2.50 per month. This brings the rate for customers inside city limits to $27.50 per unit and the outside city limits rate to $40 per unit. The new rates will take effect July 1. Also at their March 1 meeting, councilors ap- pointed Bill Ellis and Kym- berli Erevia to ill vacancies on the Boardman Budget appointment for both El- lis and Erevia to a City of Boardman board. Both will serve a three-year term end- ing December 31, 2018. The budget committee is comprised of the Board- man City Council and seven members of the commu- nity appointed by the city council. The committee holds meetings each April or May to review and make recommendations to the city council for the city and Urban Renewal Districts’ budgets. The next meeting of the Boardman Budget Commit- tee will be on Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at Boardman City Hall. Finally, at the meeting, Boardman City Councilors appointed Zack Barresse to ill a vacancy on the Board- man Planning Commission. term ending December 31, 2017. This is his irst ap- pointment to the Boardman Planning Commission. The Planning Com- mission is comprised of seven members appointed by the city council and is a permanent advisory body to the council on matters related to planning and development. The commis- sion holds monthly public meetings to consider land use and zoning matters pre- sented by staff, such as plan amendments, zone changes, conditional use permits, variances and tentative sub- division projects. Meetings are the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at city hall. Currently the Plan- ning Commission has one vacancy. Interested parties should contact Boardman City Hall at 541-481-9252. St. Patrick’s wrap-up meeting April 6 The St. Patrick’s Com- mittee will be having a wrap-up meeting April 6 at 6 p.m. at Heppner City Hall to review the events and activities of this year’s Wee Bit O’ Ireland celebration and start the planning for next year. Community members are invited to attend and share their ideas on how to make the event better, as well as get involved in the future planning of this big community event.
