Grifith honored at historical
society spring meeting
Morrow County His-
torical Society members
met March 13 at the Ir-
rigon Baptist Church. A
highlight of the 2016 spring
quarterly meeting was the
presenting of an honorary
membership award to Ione
veteran George Grifith by
past county judge Louis
Carlson.
Griffith was awarded
a plaque designating him
as an honorary member of
the Morrow County His-
torical Society. Grifith has
spent his life dedicated to
the preservation of Mor-
row County history. The
Morrow County Historical
Society honored Grifith for
his service to his country
as well as for his active in-
volvement in his local Mor-
row County communities
of Cecil, Morgan and Ione.
Griffith served his
country as a Marine during
World War II. For those in
attendance at the ceremony,
Grifith shared his candid
experience of the battle
fought on Iwo Jima. He
witnessed the raising of the
irst American lag on Mt.
Suribachi by his fellow Ma-
rines of the East Company
2 nd Battalion, 28 th on Feb.
23, 1945.
This historic moment
was captured in photo-
graph by Joe Rosenthal,
and Grifith attested to its
perfect likeness, as he was
able to see the monument
in Washington D.C. as a
participant in the Honor
Flight program.
In other business, April
15 is the date of a tour to the
Columbia Gorge Discov-
ery Center and Museum.
SHEEP DOG TRIALS
-Continued from PAGE ONE dedication and coordination also were included in the
event on Sunday, the mood
was solemn. Everyone was
concerned for Mohney. No
one knew what the future
of the sheep trials event in
Heppner would be.
Past coordinators
stepped up to take charge
of the organization for this
year, and members of the
St. Patrick’s Committee
said they felt it important
to take time during the
event this year to recognize
Mohney for her love, past
of the Heppner Sheep Dogs
Trials. For that reason, a
plaque was presented in
memory of Mohney to her
mother, Meredith Huwe.
The sheep dog participants
and coordinators also pre-
sented Huwe with a plaque
in what observers said was a
“very emotional moment.”
Alita Nelson’s 4-H
group, The Barnyarders,
have been working the
event by releasing the sheep
for the past 14 years. They

mitment, dedication and

it going,” says Heppner

executive director Sheryll
Bates. “Heppner is always
a popular place to hold the
trials, and it is part of our
