Heppner placed ninth out of 18 teams in the tournament, despite having only four scoring wrestlers at the event. –Photo by Kirsti Cason Heppner Mustang wrestlers competed at two tournaments last week, Wednesday at the Rollin Schimmel Memorial in Pendleton, and Friday and Saturday at the Jo Hi tour- nament in Joseph. Twelve teams attend- ed the Schimmel tourna- ment, mostly 4A through 6A schools. The Mustangs held their own among the bigger schools even though they only covered six of the 14 weight classes. Heppner had two wrestlers in the championship bouts. Ry a n S m i t h w o n a championship in the 120-pound weight class with a 3-0 record of three wins by fall against Mac Hi, Pendleton and Willamina opponents. Cord Flynn went 3-1 for the tournament and a second place finish with wins by fall over Willa- mina, Irrigon and Liberty opponents. He defeated Liberty’s Devin Thompson in the semiinals, the num- ber-ive ranked wrestler in 5A. His only loss was in the inals to Joe Linebarger, the number two ranked wrestler in 5A from The Dalles. Leo Waite, Will Lutch- er and Tim Jaca each won a match and also scored team points for Heppner. Eighteen teams com- peted at the Jo Hi tourna- ment on January 1 and 2. Heppner inished ninth as a team despite only four wrestlers scoring team points. Smith again won a championship at 120 pounds, defeating Jayce Hayes of Baker by a 7-5 margin in the championship bout. Smith scored half of the team points earned by the Mustangs. Cord Flynn inished 4-1 in the two-day tournament and earned a bronze medal. Will Lutcher and Tim Jaca each won a match by fall on the championship side of the bracket for their weight classes. In other business, the board received the follow- ing report: Pioneer Me- morial Hospital had three admissions in November, one admission for observa- tion, two swing bed admis- sions, one swing nursing facility admission, 415 total outpatients, 78 emergency room encounters, 1,396 lab tests, 106 x-ray procedures, 13 CT scans, 14 EKG tests, six lower endoscopy proce- dures, one upper endoscopy procedure, one lower/upper The Heppner Mustang boys’ basketball team won the Les Schwab Shoot-Out Tournament by defeating the Enterprise Outlaws in the championship game by the score of 65-34. The tournament was held at the Pendleton Convention Cen- ter on Dec. 28-29. On the irst day of the tournament, Heppner beat the Pendleton junior varsity team 56-43 to reach the championship game. Against the JV Bucka- roos, Heppner came out fast and scored early and often. The Mustangs took advan- tage of their size in the post and scored many points in the paint. Heppner led the game after one quarter 16- 7. They continued their fast pace and terrific defense in the second quarter and were ahead at the half 34- 17. Everyone on the team got minutes in the second half and did well. Heppner won the game by a score of 56-43. Patrick Collins led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds. CJ Kindle was next with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Kevin Murray, Kolby Currin and Jake Lindsay all score 6 points for the Mustangs. Murray also had 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Cur- rin had 3 rebounds and a steal while Lindsay added a steal in the game. Lo- gan Grieb inished with 5 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists and 2 steals. Weston Put- man contributed 2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Caden Hedman in- ished with 2 points and 1 rebound. Kaden Clark had a steal for the team. Heppner led 14-10 after one quarter and 25-21 at halftime. It was the third quarter that the game really changed. The Mustang got their running game go- ing and scored many easy baskets. They also turned up the defensive pressure and took control of both ends of the court. Heppner outscored Enterprise 22-5 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the fourth to get the win by a score of 65-34. Collins once again in- ished with a double-double. He scored 17 points, pulled down 19 rebounds, and had an assist and a steal in the game. Kindle was next with 12 points, 8 big rebounds and 1 assist. Put- man was close behind with 10 points and 4 rebounds on the night. Grieb inished with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist for the team. Clark hit two threes for a total of 6 points and had 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Lind- say contributed 5 points, 2 rebounds and Hedman had Heppner girls end 2015 on low note Heppner’s Kacie Gray dodges some Bulldogs last week in Pendleton. The Heppner girls’ basketball team ended 2015 on a disappointing note when it took twin losses at the Les Schwab Shoot-Out Tournament in Pendleton last week. They irst lost to Hermiston JV 31-41 on Monday and then were shot down by Enterprise 26-45 on Tuesday. They pick up in the new year with their irst league game of the season at Irrigon Friday. Currin and Wyatt Steagall each pitched in a rebound and an assist while Tommy Bredfield inished with a steal. With the wins at the quarter ended with the Mus- tangs leading 18-14. Shoot- ing in the Moda Center was certainly different for the team, as the building is so big. They had to play with the NBA three-point line and the wider key area. It didn’t seem to bother the Mustangs too much during the game. Heppner out- scored the Huskies in the second quarter and led at halftime 35-28. Sherman County got the best of the Mustangs in the third quarter 12-10, but Heppner still led the game 45-40. The Huskies did hit a couple of threes and take a brief lead in the fourth quarter of the game. Hep- pner fought back and then made six clutch free-throws in the last minute of the game. Both teams scored 15 points in the quarter and Heppner came away with the win 60-55. Patrick Collins grabbed another double-double to lead the way with a team- high 19 points and 11 re- bounds. The Mustangs inished up their pre-season sched- ule with a win over the Sherman County Huskies by a score of 60-55 last Wednesday. The game was held at the Moda Center, home of the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. Over 150 Hep- pner fans attended the game to cheer their Mustangs on. The game was held be- fore the Trailblazers game with the Denver Nuggets. Almost everyone stayed for that game, as well, and most of the Heppner fans were able to sit together in in special sections. It was a tremendous experience for the Heppner fans and the boys on the team, and something they will surely never forget. These two teams had already played once this season, with the Mustangs getting the victory by 10 points. This game, between two quality teams, was close throughout. The irst Putman also secured a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Putman also had an assist and 1 steal. CJ Kindle had a good all-around game and inished with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Caden Hedman played some tremendous defense and inished with 6 points and 2 assists. Lo- gan Grieb netted 5 points and had 1 rebound while Jake Lindsay had 4 points and 2 assists for the Mus- tangs. Kaden Clark and Kevin Murray each scored 2 points in the game. Tom- my Bredfield and Kolby Currin each had a rebound in the game. Kevin Smith and Wyatt Steagall also played in the game. The Mustangs inish their pre-season schedule with a record of 10-1. They begin conference play this weekend when they travel to Irrigon on Friday night to play the Knights.
