Boardman bans medical marijuana HEPPNER G T 50¢ azette imes VOL. 134 NO. 48 6 Pages Wednesday, December 9, 2015 At their Dec. 1 council meeting, Boardman City Councilors held a hearing to consider a ban on medi- cal marijuana within the city limits. No one at the hearing spoke in opposition of the proposed ban. With a vote of 7-0, the city council declared an emergency and voted to ban medical marijuana produc- ers, medical marijuana pro- cessors, medical marijuana wholesalers, and medical marijuana retailers within the city limits of Boardman, effective immediately. In November, the city council passed a similar or- dinance to ban recreational marijuana. In other city business, councilors heard a presenta- tion from Sam Boardman Elementary School Prin- cipal Sarah Kimmell. She spoke about a new after- school program her school is hosting. Also, the council heard a presentation from North- east Oregon Water Associa- Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Celebrate Heppner twinkles with Parade of Lights Heppner Christmas next week Reward cards and shop- ping local bring Christmas to Heppner with the Cel- ebrate Heppner Christmas event next Thursday, Dec. 17. The festive annual event starts at 6 p.m. at the Mor- row County Fairgrounds. Everyone who has been collecting reward cards is invited to bring them and participate in this com- munity get-together. The event will start with a din- ner served by Gateway Café—spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, roll, dessert and beverage to the irst 100 guests. The cost is $6 per guest, or $20 for a family of four. A no-host beer and wine bar will be provided by Bucknum’s. Aside from the food, there will be penny board and rafle items. Pictures with Santa for $5 will be taken from 6-7 p.m. Draw- ings for the rewards cards will start about 7:15 p.m., so reward cards (with en- trants’ names) need to be entered for each item before that time. Man killed in crash Santa’s mailbox has a new home in Heppner near Boardman A Philomath man lost his life in a single vehicle crash near Boardman last week. On Dec. 4 around 6:30 a.m., Morrow County Sher- iff’s Ofice, Oregon State Police troopers and other emergency personnel re- sponded to the report of a single-vehicle crash on I-84 near milepost 154 west of Boardman. When they arrived, emergency crews found a 1985 Chevrolet pickup fully engulfed in ire. After the ire was extin- guished, Keith O. Carney, 34, of Philomath, OR, was found deceased inside. OSP says preliminary information indicates the Chevrolet was traveling eastbound on I-84 when it left the roadway for un- known reasons and traveled for more than 400 feet. The pickup then struck a large boulder, where it caught ire. OSP led the investiga- tion and was assisted at the scene by MCSO, Boardman fire and ambulance, and the Oregon Department of Transportation. ALL NEWS AND ADVERTISEMENT DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. A change has been made this year to the loca- tion of Santa’s mailbox in Heppner. In years past, the drop- off site for letters to Santa was a mailbox located at the Heppner post office. This year and in the fu- ture, Santa’s letters can be mailed through a mailbox in the lobby of the Bank of Eastern Oregon. The Gazette-Times has been assured there will be The Heppner Cham- ber of Commerce has an- nounced the winners for the 2015 Parade of Lights. Best commercial entry was Murray’s Drug, with an honorable mention going to Silver Creek Contracting. Best community entry went to the Jingle Bell Dancers.
