The Mus- tangs record is 10-1 overall and they are now 1-0 in Co- lumbia Basin Conference play. They are currently the number-one ranked team in the OSAA 2A State Basket- ball rankings. The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead over the Rockets as they at- tacked their zone defense and scored many easy bas- kets. Heppner led 16-5 at the end of the first quarter and then stretched the lead to 36-16 at halftime. The Rockets came out hot in the third quarter and scored seven straight unanswered points. The Mustang girls falter in first league game of season The Heppner High School Mustang girls bas- ketball team suffered a loss in their first conference game when they were shot down by the Pilot Rock Rockets 48-24. Neither team could get much going in the first quar- ter and it ended with the score tied at 6-6. Heppner was then outscored 14-4 in the second quarter and trailed at halftime 20-10. The Mustangs, who are just now getting several key players back from injuries, could not keep up with the Rockets in the third quarter. Heppner was outscored 20-5 and trailed 40-15 as the fourth quarter started. The Mustangs did win the fourth quarter 9-8, but it was too little too late. That made the final score of the game 48-24. Heppner was led in scoring by Maddie Lindsay and Kelly Wilson, who had 7 points each. Paige Grieb followed closely with 6 points on the night. Jes- sica Kempkin and Sophie Grant contributed 2 points each in the game. Maddie Lindsay and Kempkin both 46-32 at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to Heppner as they outscored the Rockets 27-12 to get the win by the score of 73-44. Heppner shot 48 per- cent from the field over- all and held Pilot Rock to 26 percent. The Mustangs continued their streak of outrebounding teams as they dominated the Rockets on the boards 48-34. The team shared the ball well as they had 22 assists on the 29 baskets that they scored in the game. Leading the way for Heppner was Weston Put- man. He scored 21 points and hauled down a game high 14 rebounds. Weston Grieb had another strong all-around game. The soph- omore guard scored 17 points, had 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a blocked shot. Ross Cutsforth continued his strong play with 13 points, 4 rebounds and a steal for the Mustangs. Patrick Collins recorded another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. He also had an assist in the game. Jesse Corbin was next with 8 points, 4 re- bounds, 1 assist and a steal for the night. CJ Kindle had a good overall game as he scored 4 points, had 3 rebounds, 1 steal and dished out 9 assists. Kevin Murray recorded 1 rebound and had an assist. He also provided when the other Heppner big men got into foul trouble. Caden Hedman got his first- ever start for the Mustangs and had 3 rebounds and an assist for the team. Jake Lindsay and Kolby Currin each had a rebound for the team. Jeremiah Petzoldt gave the team some good minutes with his hustle on the defensive end of the floor. The Mustangs have a tough schedule ahead of them this week. The team will face off against the number three and five teams in the state. The Irrigon Knights come to Heppner on Friday night and then the Mustangs will travel to Stanfield on Saturday. The Mustangs will try to get back to their winning ways this weekend as they host the Irrigon Knights on Friday night. The team then travels to Stanfield on Saturday to play the Tigers. High school seeking teams for dodge-ball tournament Heppner High School is recruiting teams for the eighth-grade dodge ball tournament planned for Thursday, February 12, at 5:30 p.m. at Heppner High School. The event is a fund- raiser for the eighth-grade class but the tournament is open to all ages. Teams will be comprised of eight mem- bers at a cost of $40 per team. Class advisor Beth Dickenson says the school encourages businesses to put together teams, though they welcome anyone, in- cluding college kids and HHS alumni.
