Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 26, 2014 - THREE Mustang season ends at district tournament The basketball season for the H eppner b o y s' team came to an end with a 49-46 loss to the Weston- McEwen TigerScots at the Blue Mountain Conference District Tournament last w eek . T he M u sta n g s finished the year with a 14- 10 record. Heppner jumped out to a quick 12-7 lead after one quarter and also led 23-19 at halftime. The Mustangs shot 44 percent from the field and 73 percent from the line in the first half to help gain the lead. In the second half the shooting cooled off a bit and the TigerScots outscored the Mustangs 16-12 in the third quarter to tie the score at 35-35. Heppner then took the lead again when Logan Grieb hit a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter. It was the Mustangs' final lead of the game. Weston- M cE w en o u ts c o re d Heppner 14-8 the rest of the way to get the win and end the Mustangs season. “ We knew W eston- McEwen was a good team. It's tough to end the season this way, but I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my team," said coach Jeremy Rosenbalm. “ We had good intensity, but we wore down late.“ The team was led in scoring by CJ Kindle with 14. Cirieb followed with 13 and JC Putman tallied II. Andrew Hatfield and Jaden Orr both had two points for the night. JC Putman hauled down six rebounds, while Kindle and Orr both recorded five. Grieb and Hatfield both had four and Weston Putman two. Orr also had two steals in the game, and Grieb, JC Putman and Ross Cutsforth each had one. They won the three early-season tournaments they played in and qualified for the district tournament in the strongest conference in the state. The team losses four seniors, who all contributed this season, but has nine players coming back who saw varsity action. Players selected from the Heppner boys' team were Logan G rieb and Patrick Collins. Logan is a freshman who averaged 14 points per game. He also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals per game. Logan made second team All-Conference. O nly a sophom ore, Patrick was selected to the All-Conference first team. He accomplished this even though he missed the last six games of the season with a broken foot. Patrick was one of only three players in the conference to finish the season with a “double- double” in each game. He averaged 18 points and hauled down 11 rebounds per contest. Little League Majors tryouts next week Little League Major tryouts for 9 to 12 year old boys will be held March 5 and 6 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at George Watcrlund field (under the dam in Heppner).
