A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 28, at the Morrow County F a irg ro u n d s p a v ilio n , in Heppner. Concluding service and burial were at the Lexington Cemetery at Lexington, with a reception to fo llo w back at the fairgrounds pavilion. The son of Ralph A. N orton and B everly J. Wallace, he was bom July 22, 1945 in Oakland, CA. He was raised and attended sch o o l in C a lifo rn ia , graduating in 1964 from Lasson Union High School in Susanville, CA. On N ov. 7, 1970 he m arried Susan Jane Loveless in Walla Walla, WA. They re s id e d in Kamiah, ID, later moving to Heppner, where he worked as a planerman at Kinzua Pine Mill. The couple raised four children. Sue preceded him in death in November o f 2000. Mr. Norton m arried Pamela Sue Beasley on Dec. 29, 2001 in Gresham, OR. They resided in Sandy, OR before moving to Heppner in 2007. He was active in the Baptist Church and Awana. Tom also volunteered at the local school working with kids; he made several trips to Russia, where he worked with orphan children. He was well known for being a bus d riv e r in the area for many years. Tom enjoyed w o o d w o rk in g , m aking rolls and cookies, p laying th e h a rm o n ic a , camping and, most T h o m o f a ll, an y th in g Norton that involved his children and grandchildren. Survivors include wife, Pam Norton o f Heppner; daughters, Rachel Roth (B ria n ) o f K una, ID. R ebecca K indle (Jim ) o f H eppner, and Ruth K oltonski (M ichael) o f Boise, ID; son, David Norton (Katy) of Pendleton; nine grandchildren; siblings, Richard Norton, George N orton, Ralph N orton, Michele Constance, Grace Paulk, Glenn F a b i a n , M a ry Fabian. John Fabian, Robert Fabian, and Terry Fabian; and birth father, Arthur Thomas Fabian. In addition to his first wife. Sue, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Emily Koltonski. Staff is especially eager for the state’s approval of the plan, for the multi use space will be useful to residents, visitors and staff. O f course this won’t happen in tim e for this y e a r’s Super Bowl, but residents will still enjoy the game on th eir new flat-screen TV set recently donated by a long-tim e supporter of Willow Creek Terrace. The community on the Hill has a Super Bowl Board to add a little more excitement to the game, and readers are invited to join the fun o f selecting 25-cent slots in hopes o f the winning scores as the game progresses. Time is running out, though, so anyone wanting to take a chance must hurry, and bring his/ her 25-centses. Soon a fte r the big game, residents will have an opportunity to join other appreciators o f music for a performance at Heppner E l e m e n t a r y S c h o o l. Students from the Eastern Oregon State University’s m usic departm ent will perform vocal, dance and instrum ental selections on Feb. 9, sponsored by the Shared Ministry of the Episcopal and Lutheran churches. Valentine’s Day will fe a tu re its tra d itio n a l c a n d le lig h t d in n er for residents at the Terrace. But th is year, an o th er celebration will also make lunch special that day, for Liz Bueller will be sharing her 93rd birthday lunch with family and friends. And rem em ber that Billie and Bud have their c h ild re n ’s m arriage in common? Well, they also have a birth date in common, and on Jan. 17, they both will be celebrating their birthdays with friends and family. Charles Wyatt Nelson—Justin and Andrea Nelson of Heppner announce the birth of a son, Charles Wyatt Nelson. Charles was bom on Friday, January 3. 2014 at St. Anthony Hospital in Pendleton. He weighed 6 pounds and was 19 inches long. Father Justin Nelson is the Morrow County D istrict A ttorney, and mother Andrea Nelson is Heppner Jr./Sr. High School seventh and eighth grade language arts and social studies teacher. Lovgren F r a n k L. “ R e d ” Lovgren, 63, of Sun City, CA passed away January 16, 2014 at his home with family by his side. No local services are planned. Frank was bom March 17, 1950. He grew up and lived in H eppner until enlisting in the US Navy in 1969, where he served on the submarine USS Salmon for nine years, plus one year at Operation Deep Freeze in the Antarctic. Frank then left the Navy to become a chief engineer in the Merchant Marine, in which he travelled the world. He eventually tired of going to sea and, in 1985, returned to Heppner with his wife Cheri. He spent A View from the Hill Bv Doris Brosnan Such a sad day at W illow C reek T errace last Saturday, Jan. 25, for Bud Batty passed away. R esidents honored him with the playing of taps, in recognition of his service as a bombardier in World Warll. Bud was a resident at the Terrace for six and a half years and was instrumental in the p la n tin g o f the facility’s garden, which he could still be seen tending last summer. He will be missed by many friends and neighbors at the Terrace and the senior center. A memorial service for Bud and his wife, Harriet, who preceded him in death, will be held this summer. A more pleasant day saw a new neighbor move into the Terrace earlier this month, when Billie Lacey moved from the St. Patrick’s Apartments. Billie can now visit more often with friend Velma Wight and other residents, and she is now a neighbor to another friend, Bud Wilson, with whom she has something in common: Billie’s daughter April is married to Bud’s son Don. J a n u a ry h as b een a quieter m onth on the Hill, following the busy December, but residents continued their tributes to the January nationally- recognized days in their daily morning discussions and with special foods. T hese in cluded T rivia Day (5,h), Bird Day (6th), 38th anniversary o f Wheel o f Fortune (8th), English Toffee ( 11th), Banana Boats (13th), Fig Newtons (17th), World Religion Day (20th), Martin Luther King Day (23rd), C lothes-Clashing Day (24th), Compliment Day (26th), Irish Coffee (26th), the flight o f the Challenger in 1986 (28th), Blueberry Pancakes (31st), and Backwards Day (31st). These days offered several opportunities for interesting discussions and for tasty foods. January also saw the installation o f a different door to the patio from the dining room. Residents and staff are pleased with the better warmth in the room now and with the ease of use that the automatic door opener affords them. This project will soon be follow ed with some dramatic changes in the 1 2 - y e a r - o ld k itc h e n , Death Notice Raymond “Bud” Floyd Batty— Raymond “Bud” Floyd Batty, 97, of Heppner, passed away at Willow Creek Terrace Assisted Living Facility on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
