This was the first time ever in the history of Track and Field Champion ships that all divisions, 1 A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and.6A, competed at the same meet, on the same track,* and at the same time. D uring this historic event, lone women placed sixth, with 37 points, out of 39 women’s teams repre sented in 1A championship finals. The lone men tied for 17th, with 11 points, also out of 39 men’s teams represented at state. PRs are as follows: Jessie Flynn-49.12a in 300M Hurdles and 16'8.75” in Long Jump Bailey Hague- wood-41 ’0” in Triple Jump; he also had a tied PR in High Jump at 6’0” 4x100 Women Relay - 53.09a, Jessie Flynn (Fr), Adara Hasbell (So), Rachel Holland (Fr), and Shadow Kendrick (Sr) 4x400 M en R elay- 3:46.46a, Francisco Ramir ez (Jr), Evan Rietmann (Sr), Luke Jobes (Jr), and August Peterson (Jr) Individual relay splits for M en’s 4x400 Relay were all individual PRs: Francisco-57.08, Evan 55.67, Luke 58.86, and Gus 55.36 ( they ran 4.46 seconds faster than their last PR, which was at districts last week). Price made her third-straight appear ance at NAIA Nationals and positioned herself for po tential All-American hon ors in the 400-meter hurdles with a time o f 1:03.94 in Thursday’s prelims. The junior finished sixth over all on the afternoon and advanced into the finals on Saturday. Saturday capped off Price’s success. If Sandford is honored with winning the title again, she will once again be at tending the national finals in Wyoming along with the top four contestants in each rodeo event. “I hope to bring home the title again to Eastern Oregon and my team. Irrigon students succeed at Oregon Science Olympiad Irrigon—Several Irrigon Jr-Sr High School students had the opportunity to par ticipate in the 2013 Oregon Science Olympiad at West ern Oregon University in Monmouth on April 13. The Oregon Science Olympiad program provides a mix of collaboration and com petition, centered around science and engineering for middle and high school students. Students compete in events such as human anatomy and physiology, diseases, forensics, robotics and chemistry. Irrig o n J r-S r H igh School had both a middle and a high school level team participate at this year’s Olympiad. The mid dle school team consisted o f Ethan Greer, Kayden Kendrick, Keegan Krogh, Bruno Salas-Garcia and Si erra Spaur. The high school team consisted of Bowen Byers, Emily Ellis, Caitlin Hearn, Kaitlynn Linnell, Aaron Long, Hannah Mey ers, Rafael Salas-Garcia, Morgan Smith, N akayla Williamson and Jennifer Working. Students prepared for the competition for much of the school year. High schoolers Bowen Byers and Hannah Myers showed off their teamwork by taking third place in the robot arm building event. This is the annual fund raiser that helps to raise money for the lone Fourth o f July festivities. Funds go to help support the children’s fish pond, talent show, frog jump ing contest, straw pile and other events during the July 4 celebration. This year’s winner of the gun raffle was Brian Gray of Pendleton, OR. Gray won the AR rifle that was raffled that day. Tickets were sold at the event. Rick Barnett of Pendleton won the 1,000 yard bench shot. He received $100 cash and a Case tractor donated by M orrow C ounty Grain Growers. Dan Huber o f Portland, OR won the 1.000 yard Hunt ing Rifle class. Huber received $ 100 cash and a Leupold scope donated by Leupold. Dan donated back his $100 to the Fourth of July fund. Other events of the day were shotgun shots at clay pigeons, donated by Howard Mullins and Marvin Padberg. and a new pistol range. Groups participated in a shoot-off by paying $10 each. Henry Padberg won and donated his winnings to the Fourth of July Fund. Hometown Tacos of lone fed everyone during the event, and Route 74 sponsored the event. Morrow County Grain Growers, Bob Hubbard. Blagg Rifles, Mark Anderson Con struction, Magnum Opus, Gamers Sporting Goods and Snow-McElligott also spon sored the event, and Joe Hal vorsen and Frank Halvorsen provided a spot for the event. Students succeed at spelling contests Five local students were among county winners at a recent spelling contest at Blue Mountain Community College. F ifty students from three counties showed off their spelling skills in two separate spelling contest events this month. Students from Union County took on the challenge on May 6 in La Grande, and students from Umatilla and Mor row counties participated in the contest on May 13 at BMCC. First place winners re ceived $25 gift cards, sec ond place winners received $15 gift cards, and third place winners received $5 gift cards. They also re ceived trophies. Morrow County win ners are as follows: Division 1 : First, Jillian Rudolf, lone Community School; second. Gavin Rob inson, Heppner Elementary; and third. Isabella Ganvoa, Windy River Elementary. Division 2: First, Ga brielle Miller, Riverside Jr/ Sr High School; second. Olivia Schmidt, Heppner Elementary; and third, Hei nrich Padberg, lone Com munity School. Division 3: First, Oskar Peterson, lone Community School; and second, Ryan Ibarra, Riverside Jr/Sr High School.
