lone shines at state, wins multiple PRs

Personal Records (PRs)
with two team PRs at the
OSAA 1A State Champion­
ship meet held at Hayward
Field, University o f Or­
egon, in Eugene, May 23-
25, 2013. This was the first
time ever in the history of
Track and Field Champion­
ships that all divisions, 1 A,
2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, and.6A,
competed at the same meet,
on the same track,* and at the
same time.
D uring this historic
event, lone women placed
sixth, with 37 points, out
of 39 women’s teams repre­
sented in 1A championship
finals. The lone men tied
for 17th, with 11 points,
also out of 39 men’s teams
represented at state.
PRs are as follows:

Championships. Price made
her third-straight appear­
ance at NAIA Nationals and
positioned herself for po­
tential All-American hon­
ors in the 400-meter hurdles
with a time o f 1:03.94 in
Thursday’s prelims. The
junior finished sixth over­
all on the afternoon and
advanced into the finals on
Saturday.
Saturday capped off

found her stride and finished
the event with a “blistering”

Irrigon students
succeed at Oregon
Science Olympiad
Irrigon—Several Irrigon
Jr-Sr High School students
had the opportunity to par­
ticipate in the 2013 Oregon
Science Olympiad at West­
ern Oregon University in
Monmouth on April 13. The
Oregon Science Olympiad
program provides a mix
of collaboration and com­
petition, centered around
science and engineering
for middle and high school
students. Students compete
in events such as human
anatomy and physiology,
diseases, forensics, robotics
and chemistry.

year’s Olympiad. The mid­
dle school team consisted

out this year at the Halvorsen
Farm,” said one event coor­
dinator.
This is the annual fund­
raiser that helps to raise money
for the lone Fourth o f July
festivities. Funds go to help
support the children’s fish
pond, talent show, frog jump­
ing contest, straw pile and
other events during the July 4
celebration.
This year’s winner of the
gun raffle was Brian Gray of
Pendleton, OR. Gray won the
AR rifle that was raffled that
day. Tickets were sold at the
event.
Rick Barnett of Pendleton
won the 1,000 yard bench
shot. He received $100 cash
and a Case tractor donated
by M orrow C ounty Grain
Growers.
Dan Huber o f Portland,
OR won the 1.000 yard Hunt­
ing Rifle class. Huber received
$ 100 cash and a Leupold scope
donated by Leupold. Dan
donated back his $100 to the
Fourth of July fund.

Students succeed at
spelling contests
Five local students were
among county winners at a
recent spelling contest at
Blue Mountain Community
College.
F ifty students from
three counties showed off
their spelling skills in two
separate spelling contest
events this month. Students
from Union County took
on the challenge on May 6
in La Grande, and students
from Umatilla and Mor­
row counties participated
in the contest on May 13 at
BMCC.
First place winners re­
ceived $25 gift cards, sec­
ond place winners received
$15 gift cards, and third
place winners received $5
gift cards. They also re­
ceived trophies.
Morrow County win­
ners are as follows:

Correction
The Gazette-Times published the incorrect distance
for Bryce Fowler’s shot put results at the district track
meet in last week’s issue. Fowler’s PR, which put him
third in districts, was 39’ 5.5”, not 37’ 2” as published.
