Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 13,2013 Remembrance Walk/5K Run planned On March 16, Friends Helping Friends will com memorate the fifth annual Rem em brance Walk/5K Run while enjoying Hep pner’s 31s* St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. Friends Helping Friends will gather at 8:30 a.m. in the Heppner United Methodist Church for a re membrance social hour and registration. Participants’ $5 donations will be kept in a local pot o’ gold and do nated to St. Patrick’s Senior Center and Apartments. The route is a 5K (3.1 mile) loop around wee little Heppner. Start time is 9:30 a.m. The race will begin and end at the Heppner United Methodist Church. The run starts with a short out-and-back, north on Riverside Ave. to the Heppner High School soft ball field. Runners will then cut over to the Heppner El ementary School. From the school, the route passes by the Morrow County Court house and heads towards Hager Park, where runners will cross in front o f the Willow Creek Dam. On the downhill stretch, runners will pass through th e n e i g h b o r h o o d o f Sweeney Mortuary toward the U.S. Forest Service of fice and finish out the run on Main Street, returning to the Methodist Church. Run ners are then free to grab a drink and some snacks in the church basement. Participants are asked to keep a few things in mind: The St. Patrick’s Day run is for fun; it is not a timed event, although runners are encouraged to finish. Run at your own pace and feel free to walk if you need to. Strollers and dogs on leashes are welcome. There shouldn’t be much traffic, but runners are asked to be vigilant...look both ways before crossing the road, stay on sidewalks or shoul ders whenever possible, and face traffic. Everyone is encouraged to wear green or pink. Make checks payable to St. Patrick’s Senior Cen ter and mail donations to Friends Helping Friends, c/o Susan Hisler, 56504 Little Buttercreek Rd., Hep pner, OR 97836. - FIVE Cardinals advance to districts after busy week Cardinal basketball had a busy week last week, go ing head-to-head against Echo on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and then charging into the weekend to play Central Christian on Friday and Dufur on Saturday. The Lady Cards were dished a close 41-49 loss by Echo. They rebounded to take a decisive 60-33 vic tory over Central Christian, only to fall to Dufur the next night, 30-38. Despite the two losses, though, the girls advance to district playoffs and will match up against Sherman in the first game of the district tourney in Hermiston High School at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. The lone boys, after taking a 48-54 loss to Echo, decided they didn’t like the taste o f defeat. They went on to achieve solid wins o f 76-19 over Central Christian and 79-47 over Dufur. They, too, advance to districts in Hermiston, where they will play against Sherman at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
