The 32-man brackets included teams from 1A to 6A from all over Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho. At the end of the first day, the Mustangs still had 10 wrestlers in the double elim ination tournam ent, including three in the cham pionship semifinals. Our boys and girls basketball have two games this weekend and one game this next week. T his w eek en d , the Mustangs play on Friday, Dec. 14, starting at 6 p.m. with girls’ varsity and boys' varsity to follow; this game will be played against the Stanfield Tigers here at home. On Saturday, Dec. 15, the home teams will play the Pilot Rock Rockets at the Pendleton high school; this game will start at 6 p.m. with the girls’ varsity and boys’ varsity to follow. Finally, this next week, our Heppner Mustangs will have a game against the Imbler Panthers on Tues day, Dec. 18; the basketball games will start at 3 p.m. One of this week’s fea tured seniors is Justin Roy Howey. His parents are Ray and Tami Howey, and he has two siblings, Trent and Dylan Howey. Howey’s favorite color is pink and his favorite food is either ribs or m ashed ‘taters. When Howey has time on his hands, he likes to play football, and he enjoys go ing hunting. After Howey graduates high school, he plans on going to Wyoming to attend a trade school for H ap p y H o lid a ys from E lite P erfo rm an ce! After Dyer graduates high school, she plans on going to the University of Oregon and majoring in psychology. The M ustangs started a little slow but then picked up the pace and led the game 28-13 at halftime. The Mustangs didn’t look back in the second half as they flew by the Rockets for the win. Grieb once again led the team in scoring with 20 points. He also had six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the game. Murray and Alex Lindsay scored six points each with Currin, Hedman and Smith all tallying four. Jake Lind say, Kane Sweeney and Kaden Corbin each scored two points. Currin tied for the most rebounds with six and Murray had five. The team now has a re cord of 5-3 for the season. Reading class seeks to fill holes in homeless’ Christmas Mrs. Jannie Allen's sixth grade reading class at Heppner Elementary School is reading Holes. Since one of the underlying themes of the story is homelessness, Mrs. Allen bought socks and the students brought toiletries such as shampoo and toothpaste. The sixth-grade readers rolled up one sock and put it in the toe of its mate, and then filled the sock with the remaining items. Once tied with Christmas ribbon, the socks were placed into Christmas bags to be delivered to a homeless agency in Portland. A scrappy Viking defense held the Mustang offense in check for most of the game. Only three players scored points for the Mustangs, with Grieb getting eight, Hedman six and Murray four. Hedman and Murray each had eight rebounds, and Kolby Currin and Grieb both added four rebounds for the contest. The final game for the team was against the lone Cardinals, and the Mus tangs won by a score of 43-20. Leading the way in scoring was Grieb with 17 points, while Hedman had 11 and Jake Lindsay and Currin added five each.
