Reading class seeks to fill
holes in homeless’ Christmas
Mrs. Jannie Allen's sixth grade reading class at Heppner Elementary School is reading Holes.
Since one of the underlying themes of the story is homelessness, Mrs. Allen bought socks and
the students brought toiletries such as shampoo and toothpaste. The sixth-grade readers rolled
up one sock and put it in the toe of its mate, and then filled the sock with the remaining items.
Once tied with Christmas ribbon, the socks were placed into Christmas bags to be delivered
to a homeless agency in Portland. Bottom (L-R): Carson Brosnan, Zavier Glover, Hayden
