To be a person o f good character, youth must develop strengths o f the 4 “Hs” : head— they must know w hat is good; h e a rt— they must desire to do the good; hands— they must be willing to do good; and health— they must develop a lifestyle that supports the desire and willing ness to do good. The Morrow County 4-H program strives to develop good character in 4-H members. Qualities that define good character have been debated by various groups but, in 1992, the Josephson Institute o f Eth ics with the help o f scholars, parents, youth w orkers and others published the Aspen Declaration. This declaration has becom e the cornerstone for the c h a ra c te r d e v e lo p ment education program s in the United States. The Aspen Declaration states: 1. People do npt a u to matically develop good moral character. Children m ust be taught so that they develop the values and abilities necessary for moral decision making and conduct. 4. Character education is based on core ethical values— pillars o f character develop ment— trustworthiness, respect for others, responsibility, fair ness, caring and citizenship. 5. These core values tran scend cultural, religious and socio-economic differences. 6. Youth have a b e tte r chance o f learning moral val ues if all groups work together to teach and reinforce moral values. 8. Every adult must take responsibility to m odel and teach the pillars o f character development. You can see that, although this declaration was only de veloped in 1992, 4-H, as the youth program o f the land- grant u n iv ersities (O regon State U niversity) has been using similar guidelines for the past 98 years. Pet show planned for Wednesday Think you have the coun ty ’s best pet? Now is your chance to prove it. The fair’s annual pet show will take place on Wednesday, August 15, at 3 p.m. The ugli est and prettiest pet contest will be held immediately following the show. E veryone is in v ited to “Come see all the many differ ent pets there can be.”
