Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, July 11, 2012 - THREE Chamber Chatter Heppner Due to great commu nity support, the Morrow County’s Relay for Life event was a huge success for our local communities. More information will be sent out soon as a recap o f the event. Those who purchased luminaries for a loved one can pick them up at the Community Bank through Friday, July 13. Anyone who would like to make a donation still can; make a donation online through August 31 at http:// relayforlife.org/heppneror or drop it off at Bank of Eastern Oregon, Commu nity Bank or the Heppner Chamber office. We would like to give a “Shout Out” for those food vendors who helped feed the teams as they walked endless laps. Quality Concessions were there from 3 - 11:30 p.m. on Saturday; Team CCS offered a Taco/Enchiladas fundraiser meal from 12-2 a.m. and The Stable of Youth (Bobbette Lovgren) set up from 1-5 a.m. on Sunday morning. Although not all of the money is in yet, we have already raised $18,500; we are hoping to raise at least $20,000 before the campaign ends. Friday, July 13, 11 a.m. at the Heppner Library: Care to be bugged? Programs for children and adults will be offered for area resi dents interested in learning more about the fascinating world of insects. The pro grams will be presented by entom ologists Dr. Silvia Rondon and Carol Mills from Oregon State Univer sity’s Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The children’s program is tar geted for preschool through elem entary school ages and will cover these top ics: what are insects, good insects and bad insects, how and where to collect them, and how to preserve insects. Children will hear a story from The Beauti ful Beetle Book and will enjoy hands-on activities including an insect puzzle and harvesting ants to place in a see-through colony. Samples of interesting in sects will be displayed. A second one-hour program will begin at noon at each location, immediately fol lowing the children’s pro gram. While this program is targeted to adults, children are welcome to attend with their parents. Insect ba sics. biology and the insect world will be covered in a 30-minute power point presentation. Displays of insects from the laboratory and under microscopes will allow attendees to view main insect pests in the region as well as those that are beneficial. The training is free for Heppner Commu nity Members and is being sponsored by Community Counseling Solutions. The class will be held upstairs in the Gillam-Bisbee Build ing (120 S. Main Street).
