BEAR SHOT IN HEPPNER -Continuedfrom PAGE ONE cated, but rarely are bears Cherry was unable to reach anyone with the Or egon State Police or other ODFW workers. Given the bear’s unusually behavior, Cherry gave a citizen per mission to dispatch the bear and take it to the ODFW Heppner office. “ We had a bear that came into an area com pletely away from its nor mal habitat, that was act ing completely abnormal for human-bear behavior. Because o f that, and the proximity to town and the potential for problems— potential for health and human safety concerns, pet concerns—the decision was made by me that the safest thing to do was to euthanize the bear,” said Cherry. He said that, while not standard procedure for dealing with bears close to human habitation, it is not uncommon for bears that close to town to be eutha nized. “ If a bear comes in close proximity to town and there is bear habitat adjacent to town, they’ll (ODFW) let the bear come down (from the tree) and try to make it go back to where it came from, especially if the bear isn’t causing a problem,” Cherry explained. “Bears will sometimes be tranquilized and relo allowed to stay where they might cause problem s,” Cherry continued, saying bears out of their habitat are rarely relocated, because experience has shown they will travel right back to the area from where they were removed. “Unfortunately, bears that act unusually often do get euthanized. A bear like this, miles from normal bear habitat, not displaying fear of humans and acting in an abnormal way... It was my decision to euthanize the bear and not have it wander into town and cause a problem.” Cherry said he didn’t know why the young bear wandered so close to town. While young bears some times wander into unusual areas when they first sepa rate from their mothers, this bear appeared to be beyond that age. He hadn’t heard of any instances of people feeding bears locally, which might cause the bear to seek out humans. Nor he said, did it appear to be a forage issue, since the mountains currently have plenty o f good forage. “I think the only answer to that question is that, when an animal decides it wants to go somewhere, it has four feet, so it can get there. We don't always understand why.” Community lunch menu Willow Creek Baptist Church members will be serving lunch on Wednesday, June 20, at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. The meal will include smoked sausage casserole, cucumbers and onions, sliced tomatoes, hot rolls and cookies. Milk is served at each meal. Suggested donation is $3.50 per meal. Menu is subject to change. PUBLIC NOTICE N O T IC E O F B U D G E T H E A R IN G A public meeting of the Irrigon City Council will be held on June 1 9 . 2 0 1 2 at 6 0 0 pm at 5 0 0 N E Main Ave .
