Ammonia leak in Boardman Em ergency services from two counties respond ed to an anhydrous ammo nia \eak at the Boardman Lamb Weston/Con Agra facility recently, according to a statement by the Mor row County Sheriffs Of fice. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ammonia is a pungent, toxic gas that at tacks skin, eyes, throat, and lungs and can cause serious injury or death, Around 9:30 p.m. May 15, a leak occurred at the food processing plant in Boardm an. The facility was evacuated and emer gency services called to the scene. Seven patients were transported to Good Shepherd Hospital with varying degrees of respira tory distress and nausea. A nother four personnel were initially seen by EMTs on site but refused transport to the hospital. The patients that were transported to the hospital were held for observation, but all were expected to be released in a few hours. The leak was contained by on site plant personnel, and the last emergency unit cleared the scene around midnight. A definitive cause is yet to be determined. Units from Boardman Fire, Irrigon Fire, Hermis- ton Fire, Morrow County Health D istrict, MCSO and Boardman Police all responded. A similar ammonia leak occurred in the Boardman area and apparently went unnoticed several years ago. On June 30, 2008, an elec trical storm caused power surges that disrupted the computers and compressors that control the ammonia system at Columbia River P rocessing’s Boardman facility, according to the EPA. The computer failure caused a pressure relief valve to open and release nearly 2,500 pounds o f ammonia into the envi ronment. Columbia River Processing, recently agreed to a settlem ent with the EPA, including a $42,435 penalty. Located In the Rolling Hills near Hardman.
