HeppnerGazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, November30,2011 Jfrom tbe 1961 arcljibeö of tbe fêeppner êa^ette-Cintesi Christmas tree up near city center H eppner’s com munity Christmas tree, re splendent in silver sheen, was placed near the Wil low and Main intersec tion Tuesday to bring the decoration and cheer for the holiday season. The project was a cooperative effort the tree being obtained by Kinzua C orporation, and Nate McBride gave it a spray coat of silver paint. Crews o f the City o f Heppner helped men of Columbia Basin Electric Co-op, with their new line truck, put it in place in front of the Heppner Hotel. Auger of the truck bored a hole some six feet through the Main Street paving, and a section of pipe was inserted. Butt o f the tree was dropped into the pipe and it was secured with sand tamped around it. The tree is some 25 feet tall— not the big gest, but one of the pret tiest. A gallon o f silver paint was used to give the wintery appearance. Radio Equipped Police Car Being Considered H e p p n e r m ay soon have a two-way radio equipped police car and an emergency telephone number which will be able to contact state and city police, ambulance doctors and many others in case of emergency. Tentative plans are to have the radio sta tioned at City Hall with a night man on the job to take calls there, as well as the regular day time help. When the police car is equipped with the two way radio, police officers said they could get from any one part o f town to another within two min utes to answer calls. The present method of notify ing an officer when he is wanted is to turn on a light on Main Street, and he is to report to find out what emergency the light indicates. Since a good part o f the police duty is to patrol the town there are many instances where this light can be unanswered for some time. Though no serious consequences have resulted to date it was thought necessary to provide a better method of contacting the police.
