The organization is honing in on such preventative health measures as part of three fo cus areas it developed after an assessment o f Morrow County’s health needs. Following the as sessment, workgroups have convened to improve com munication between health care providers, and between health care providers and the community; promote healthy lifestyles, and pre vent and manage disease; and increase the availability of physical activity and fit ness opportunities. “G ood health is more than just treating ill nesses. Many of the lead ing causes o f death and disability can be prevented and there is ample opportu nity to achieve good health through preventive mea sures, such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating right, on the project at a recent Chamber of Commerce presentation announcing the bikeway. The bike ride, which is only the third designated bikeway in Oregon, runs from Heppner up Willow Creek, over to the Ukiah Junction, down Highway 395 to Nye Junction onto Highway 74 and back to Heppner. If one is a good bike rider, the trip can be made in seven hours, but can also be broken up into several days for the less hardy. The 108-mile designated bicycle route runs from Heppner to Battle Mountain in the Blue Mountains and covers some of the most scenic country in the Blues. The process to gain the designation took 18 months and was started by former Ranger Tom Mafera. Jay Gibbs and Debra Gutierrez of the local ranger district, and Sheryll Bates of the Heppner Chamber of Commerce worked on the project. “She was like a dog with a bone,” Gutierrez said about Bates’ work ease, health screening, not using tobacco, getting vac cinated, maintaining good oral health and living within a community culture that supports people in making healthy choices,” stated a CHIP release. The CHIP will be proposing strategies to ad dress the needs identified locally. The first program will be C H IP’S “ Biggest Winner,” a 12-week weight- loss competition scheduled from January 9 to April 2, 2012 . In the meantime, those who want to get fit can join the Willow Creek walking group on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, beginning on October 7. Walkers will meet in front of Murray’s Drug Store for a leisurely stroll or a vigor ous walk for any length of time that fits lunchtime schedules. The vaccine is incu bated in eggs, so if a person is allergic to eggs, chickens or feathers, he should not receive the shot without first doing a scratch test to verify the allergy. The shot should not be given during an acute respiratory infec tion or other active infec tion. The shots are very safe; if any reaction occurs, it, ^ usually a mild fever, aching and fatigue. This may last one to two days. Rarely, a person will get hives, which is probably due to an egg allergy. The more serious paralysis o f Guillain-Barre syndrome is very rare and is only known to be associ ated with the “swine flu” component, which was last used in 1976. T h e im m u n ity against the virus wanes, and the viral strains change each year, which is why the shot is needed each year.
