Stone said that the cooperative agree ment, linking Heppner High School and MEC, may help HHS, with a declining en rollment, maintain staff and curriculum. HHS teachers Jolene Stensland, language arts, John Flaherty, history, Jason Palmer, math, Jeremy Rosenbalm, business and Greg Grant, health, would offer up to 12 sections of in struction to MEC students. “We’re committed to mak ing this work,” stated Stone. “This is another option for students who don’t maybe fit into the old o f a tradi tional classroom .” “It’s going to be a huge asset to our program,” commented M elville. The course is on-line, but has teacher sup port. The program is profi ciency based, meaning that the students move at their own pace, and take exams to prove their knowledge of the subject, rather than be ing graded on homework or classroom participation. -learned that the district food service pro gram got off to a “rough start,” in terms of new re quirements but, added Andy Fletcher, MCSD business manager, reported that the “Kids were full, happy and headed off to class.” -learned that Dave Krumbein, Hermiston, is running for reelection to an Oregon School Board Association spot. The board nom inated board C hair Thad Killingbeck to run for election to an OSBA Leg islative Policy Committee position. -h eard a re p o rt from George Mendoza, as sistant superintendent, on two web-based programs that were designed to help special education and low performing students real ize improvement. He said that the Success M aker program, a math and read ing intervention program designed for elementary level students purchased by the district for $79,000, is working well, but reported numerous problems with Read 180, a reading pro gram for secondary level students purchased at a cost of $ 109,000 by the district. He said that the district and tech support are working to resolve the problems. The programs were purchased through a $442,500 federal stimulus grant. Mendoza said that the funds would have reverted back to the federal government if they had not been used by the district. -approved appoint ment o f Janet Dezellem to the MCSD Budget Com mittee Position #4, replac ing Becky Kindle who was elected to the board. -approved a suc cessor contract with MidCo Bus Company for transpor tation services.
