Joseph is ranked as one of the bet ter teams and they provided quality competition.” “We are making improvements,” he continued. “We had a quality week o f practice. We had enough players to provide good coverage of the positions, making both the offense and defense consistently better. During the game, our team showed good improvement over last week; exercising good control in the offensive line. We had an even ball game during the first half, proving we have a competitive team and we held Joseph score less in the second half.” W eiper said the team all played consis tently well and that we have good depth on the team. He added, “We were able to combine old and new plays and execute them profi ciently; on short notice and without practicing them. This combined with having a high percentage of con version points (10 points), added to our successful win. Coach Eynetich noted that serving for the team was 100 percent for the final two games of the tourney. With two weeks un der their belts and an unblem ished record, Coach Eynetich is looking forward to con tinued good things from the team. “I think we have a ton of potential. We have some areas we still need to work on but I think we can go far this season.” The team is currently ranked ninth in the OSAA rankings although there has not been enough season for those rankings to start making sense. The Lady Cardinals finished last season with a thrilling third place finish at the state volleyball tourna ment. assignm ents and played consistent. The offense was just short of 300 yards on the ground-near 289- and had over a 100 in the air. The defense ju st played well, and as the game went on, they got better and bet ter. I feel there were three outstanding players that contributed greatly to our win. Zac Orem, as quar terback he did a nice job for us. He ran well, threw accurate passes on plays that we needed, was good at his pitch and played a good technical game on the offense. On defense he just played well, once he got the hang of his position. Evan Rietm ann ran over 100 yards and did well in his new position of linebacker. He had four team tackles and was very effective all over the field. And Omar Juarez had 13 tackles and made a nice catch on of fense, as well as snagging an interception.” “Overall, I am real happy with the develop ment of the Cardinal team and I am beginning to feel like they are connecting to me and I feel more like myself on the field.” said Coach Weiper. “I look forward to coaching these boys and am feeling more at ease with them.” Photo by Sandy Matthews lone Cardinals will host Dayville/Monument at The Heppner Mustangs fought a long hard battle coming up short against Gold Beach 7 p.m. this Friday. “This Sept. 9 at Heppner.
