Joseph
ways, mow down opponents
The lone Lady Car
dinals continued their winning
ways on the volleyball court
last weekend, mowing down
any opponent who got in their
way. The Cards improved
their season record to 6-0 with
a win over Joseph on Friday
and a convincing title run at
the Summit Springs Tourney
on Saturday. The road looks
a little tougher ahead, though,
with a brutal three day stretch
of games scheduled. lone
travels to Heppner on Thurs
day for matches with Heppner
and Grant Union. Friday, they
host the defending state cham
pion, Cove, and Saturday they
hit the trail to Joseph again for
the Joseph Tournament.
On Friday, Septem
ber 9, the Cards found Joseph
to be fairly easy pickings,
downing the Eagles in three
games, 25-15, 25-12, 25-11.
JoAnna Patton continued to
be a force from every spot on
the floor, leading the team with
14-14 serving and two aces.

The lone C ardi
nals traveled to Joseph last
Friday where they were
matched up with one of
the better ranked teams.
With Joseph quickly scor
ing a touchdown in the first
minutes o f the game, the
Cardinals rose to the chal
lenge. Zac Orem found a
hole and scampered into the
end-zone, only to be called
back on a penalty. Then
Micah Stillman rushed 11
yards, unchallenged, for a
touchdown. Joseph scored
another touchdown, which
was answ ered by Evan
Rietmann with a four-yard
rush for another touchdown
for the Cardinals.
M icah S tillm an
completed the conversion
for two points, putting the
Cards in the lead 14-12.
Joseph scored a touchdown
and two point conversion
to end the first quarter with
a 20-14 lead. The Cards
put in another touchdown
with a seven-yard run by
Gus Peterson and a two-
point conversion by Evan
Rietmann to take back the
lead, 22-20.
Rietm ann com
pleted an eight-yard run
for another touchdow n;
bringing the score to 28-20.
Then Joseph scored another
touchdown, now 28-26.
Towards the end of
the first half Kirk Hague-
wood intercepted the ball
at the 10-yard line and the
Cardinals took possession.
Micah Stillman got another
touchdown on a 10-yard run
and Omar Juarez completed
the two-point conversion,
bringing the half-time score
to 36-26.
lone went on to
hold the Joseph Eagles
scoreless for the rest of the
game. During the third
quarter, Evan was good
for a touchdown and he
received the pass in the end-
zone, for the conversion, to
end the quarter 44-26. In
fourth quarter play, Micah
Stillman ran a punt return
49 yards up the sideline for
another touchdown and Gus
Peterson ran the two-point
conversion. The final score
V
Micah Stillman
was 52-26.
After the game,
Coach Stan W eiper re
marked, “I am very pleased
with the outcom e. We
made a massive jump to the
positive. We battled both
emotionally and physically,
scoring tit for tat throughout
the first half. Our defen
sive line held them when
it counted, and we took
the lead during the second
quarter, and held them when
Joseph had the chance to
take the lead back. Joseph
is ranked as one of the bet
ter teams and they provided
quality competition.” “We
are making improvements,”
he continued. “We had a
quality week o f practice.
We had enough players to
provide good coverage of
the positions, making both
the offense and defense
consistently better. During
the game, our team showed
good improvement over
last week; exercising good
control in the offensive line.
We had an even ball game
during the first half, proving
we have a competitive team
and we held Joseph score
less in the second half.”
W eiper said the
team all played consis
tently well and that we have
good depth on the team. He
added, “We were able to
combine old and new plays
and execute them profi
ciently; on short notice and
without practicing them.
This combined with having
a high percentage of con
version points (10 points),
added to our successful
win. Our offense did a nice
job, was accurate on their

able to substitute freely and
rotate in everyone in the next
two games as lone downed
Long Creek 25-13, 25-8 and
then took care of South Wasco
County 25-10, 25-17. Coach
Eynetich noted that serving
for the team was 100 percent
for the final two games of the
tourney.
With two weeks un
der their belts and an unblem
ished record, Coach Eynetich
is looking forward to con
tinued good things from the
team. “I think we have a ton
of potential. We have some
areas we still need to work on
but I think we can go far this
season.”
The team is currently
ranked ninth in the OSAA
rankings although there has
not been enough season for
those rankings to start making
sense. The Lady Cardinals
finished last season with a
thrilling third place finish at
the state volleyball tourna
ment.
assignm ents and played
consistent. The offense was
just short of 300 yards on
the ground-near 289- and
had over a 100 in the air.
The defense ju st played
well, and as the game went
on, they got better and bet
ter. I feel there were three
outstanding players that
contributed greatly to our
win. Zac Orem, as quar
terback he did a nice job
for us. He ran well, threw
accurate passes on plays
that we needed, was good
at his pitch and played a
good technical game on the
offense. On defense he just
played well, once he got the
hang of his position. Evan
Rietm ann ran over 100
yards and did well in his
new position of linebacker.
He had four team tackles
and was very effective all
over the field. And Omar
Juarez had 13 tackles and
made a nice catch on of
fense, as well as snagging
an interception.”
“Overall, I am real
happy with the develop
ment of the Cardinal team
and I am beginning to feel
like they are connecting
to me and I feel more like
myself on the field.” said
Coach Weiper. “I look
forward to coaching these
boys and am feeling more
at ease with them.”
