T ric ia R o llin s , branch manager at the Hep pner branch of the Bank of Eastern Oregon, and Sharon Rietmann, branch manager at the lone branch of Bank of Eastern Oregon, drew the names of some lucky stu dents who won brand new backpacks filled to the top with new school supplies. Ty Boor and Cara Arbogast were the lucky winners in Heppner. Carter Eynetich and Kalvin Riet mann were the winners in lone. All branches of BEO are having similar draw ings, giving away back packs at each branch and/or donating the supplies they purchased and collected from staff and community to the school. “Bank of Eastern Oregon always looks for ward to making this an annual event. BEO appre ciates the donations and hopes you’ll join them in supporting the drive for school supplies next year, too,” said a bank spokes person. Columbia River Community Health holds barbecue tion of Community Health Centers, Community Health Center Week. Nearly 250 people were in attendance as the clinic staff cooked up hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the fixings. This is the seventh year CRCHS has held its community appreciation barbecue, in conjunction with the National Associa- Desert Springs Bottled Wa ter donated a water cooler and several bottles of water. Tienda El Sol II provided the cake decorated to mark the occasion. The food and drinks were served by the staff and health care pro viders of Columbia River Community Health Ser vices. Leann Rea. The Morrow County Court met on Au gust 10 in Irrigon with Judge Terry Tallman and Commissioner Ken Grieb in attendance. The court reviewed and approved the account payables and the July 2011 retirement taxes in the net amount of $224,691.83. Sheriff’s Report: Sheriff Ken Matlack pro vided and reviewed the monthly report for July and stated that there are currently 88 clients in the Parole and Probation (P&P) program . S h eriff Mat- lack reported that they are looking for a work crew supervisor for P&P. He also reported that $1,513 in su pervision fees had been col lected, adding that 45.1 per cent of the offenders have paid their supervision fees. There will be more pressure put on the offenders to pay their fees in a timely man ner. The sheriff reported that the Irrigon work crew brought in $631 and the south end crew brought in $500 for the month of June. On the recommenda tion of Undersheriff Steve Myren, the court declared a 2009 Dodge Charger with 92,500 miles as surplus and recommended the vehicle go to the state surplus for disposal. The spelling cham pionship will once again take place at the Oregon State Fair in Salem on Saturday, September 3. A fter 33 years o f being directed by the O regon D epartm ent o f E d u catio n , th is y e a r ’s spelling championship will be sponsored by Oregon Spellers, an all-volunteer group funded solely by donations. The group was formed in 2009 in response to the ODE’s budget-driven decision to eliminate their state-level spelling contest. David Walker o f KAVL TV News will be em ceeing the statew ide spelling contest this year. He will pronounce each word, use it in a sentence and then interview the contestants while judges score the test papers. The O reg o n Statewide Spelling Cham pionship is not an oral spelling bee but rather a written contest, all spellers in the same Division will receive the same words. It is not affiliated with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Students compete at the elem entary, mi ddle and high school levels. First, second, and third place winners will receive U.S. Savings Bonds. The audience is also invited to test their skill by spelling the contest words along with the students. August 31 is the 2012 sales closing date for several Oregon crops for both NAP and multi-peril crop insurance applications. Other crops for 2012 have later application and sales closing dates. Brandt Electric, Inc., amending the previous agreement; -reviewed and ap prove a resolution in the matter o f acknowledging Morrow County’s Policy for procurement of goods and services. U m atilla C oun ty H ousing A uthority: Umatilla County Housing Authority D irector Stan Stradley and Deputy Direc tor Don Skeen stated their agency has been operating since 1949 and serving Town of Lexington receives $20 thousand Wildhorse Foundation grant The Town of Lexington has received notice that the Wildhorse Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant to the town’s fire garage project, reports town recorder Dee Burch. The old garage needs to be tom down as part of a larger FEMA grant project to move critical services out of the flood way. “These funds will go a long way in getting the project out of the planning stages and into construction,” said Burch. The court reviewed a draft of the new Morrow County, Oregon Aggregate M aterial Depletion Fee. The court approved a tax refund to Cascade Spe cialties in the following amounts: 2007-08 year in the amount of $1,094.92; 2008-09 year in the amount of $944.51; 2009-10 year in the amount of $823.98; and 2010-11 year in the amount of $682.62. The court reviewed a letter from Pablo R. Flores offering to purchase six vacant lots in Irrigon for the sum o f $500 for each lot. After checking market value and foreclo sure policies, it was decided to decline the offer as the amount did not meet the minimum offer threshold. The court reviewed miscel laneous correspondences and discussed upcoming meetings.
