T h e day s ta rte d chilly, with vendors huddled in blankets and shoppers wearing heavy sweatshirts, but the sun came out as the market got into full swing. S e v e ra l fam iliar faces show ed up to sell their wares at Heppner City Park. Larry and Charlene Day o f Pilot Rock were p rese n t w ith tab les full o f fresh strawberries and cherries. Andrea and Moira o f Di Salvo’s Italian Ice Cream offered several arti san gelato flavors, including strawberry rhubarb and red licorice. Vern and Ginger K eithley were also back w ith th e ir h a n d -c ra fted gourds, table runners and popular pot holders. Aside from those market mainstays, several new vendors also arrived to show off hand-made crafts and fresh items. M a g g ie M a b e spent the day in a tempo rary garden o f cut flowers. She was quick to point out that her own green thumb hadn’t raised the blooms, but everyone agreed that the roses, snapdragons and gar denias brought a welcome splash o f color to the park. Phyllis Piper’s table displayed hand-made Rag gedy Ann dolls. Piper spent the hours during the market showing off her handiwork as she crafted yet another finals results are as fol lows: doll for display. J ill P o w ell w as present w ith hand-m ade jewelry, wine charms and woven baskets. Powell said she’s been making jewelry for 20 years and baskets for 35. She plans to add mini baskets and wire-wrapped b ead w o rk to her future market wares. Molly and Joe Tin dall offered flower art made o f dried, fram ed flow er arrangem ents, some with a touch o f paint or shellac. They also offered hand made jewelry. The Friends o f the Library was also there with used books for sale. The N atural R esources C on servation Services (NRCS) had chives and radishes to give away along with brochures and conservation info. Representatives o f the NRCS said they have a gar den from which they plan to give produce throughout the season. The farmers mar ket will take a break on July 1 in honor o f the holiday w eekend. These vendors and more, though, will be back from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday into October. Anyone who would like to share their musical talents at the farm er’s mar ket is invited to come play during scheduled hours. Space is still available for a seasonal fee of $20. Heppner will also send participants to Wen- nemucca, NV: Blake Gree nup, freshm an; Taighler Dougherty, senior; Devin Robinson, senior and Willy Gentry, senior. The Intermountain Girls Team, o f which Gree nup and Dougherty are both m em bers, also w on the championship. Devin Robinson received a $2,000 Oregon High School Rodeo Association Academic Scholarship by Jon Bowerman through the Oregon Community Foundation, $600 for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Tie Down, $600 for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Cutting, $400 for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Steer Wrestling and $300 for NHSRA Ariat - OHSRA Student President. Willy Gentry received a $400 scholarship for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Bull Riding. Taighler Dougherty was the recipient of $600 for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Pole Bending, $400 for OHSRA Athletic Excellence in Breakaway Roping and $250 for Teskey’s Top Hand Award for Exemplary Horsemanship in the arena. Skweez The Wee zle is an acoustic band that has been carrying on the Celtic music tradition since M*arch 1999 from th eir base o f operations in the Tri-Cities area. Their rep ertoire includes traditional and original tunes from H ig h lan d and L ow land S cotland, Ireland, Cape Breton Island, Wales and the USA. For the past 11 years, the band has kept a busy schedule performing thro u g h o u t W ashington, Oregon, Idaho, and M on The Heppner High School m en’s basketball team recently traveled to Corvallis to participate in the Craig Robinson Oregon State University Team Camp. The players traveled with coach Jeremy Rosen balm to take part in the two day camp. The Mustangs played five games against teams from Scio, Waldport, Beaverton and Portland, four o f which they played on the Beavers' home court in Gill Coliseum. The team also had the opportunity to tour the Beavers’ locker room, weight training and conditioning complex, and Reser Stadium. A highlight o f the weekend was a private shoot- around in Gill Coliseum with Beaver assistant coach Nate Pomeday. OSU head coach, Craig Robinson, welcomed the boys to camp and stayed to watch all of the games that were played. He was sentenced to co n secu tiv e term s o f 32 and 28 m onths in the custody o f the Oregon De partm ent o f C orrections and 10 years post-prison supervision.
