FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 15,2011 Bank of EO awards $4,000 in local scholarships Local students re ceived eight o f the twen ty $500 scholarships the Bank of Eastern Oregon awarded to graduating se niors through its Agricul- tural/Business Scholarship Program this year. Six of these scholarships were awarded to Heppner High School seniors and two were awarded to lone High School seniors. This is the 19,h year the bank offered this program, giving away over $86,000 to date. Joe Armato, HHS, was active in football, be ing aw ard ed several times for his o f f e n s iv e lineman po sitio n . He Joe Armato also was on the varsity golf team. Throughout high school, Joe held school positions such as class trea surer, student body assistant treasurer and treasurer. He was a member of pep band, Spanish club, civics club, and National Honor Soci ety. Joe was also a member o f the HHS know ledge master team and partici pated in Mustang Mop-lJp each year. He was one of six students who earned the Presidential Gold Award for high school juniors. In community service, Joe was an assistant for the Willow Creek youth g olf camp, refereed Colt games, was an assistant for Chess for Success and was a nine- year 4-H member, holding the club treasurer posi tion. Joe earned many food awards through the 4-H membership, was a 4-H ambassador, clerked in the foods division at fair, and was a 4-H camp counselor. He is very active in St. Patrick’s parish, has been a member of the youth group, a teacher’s aide, helped with carnival fundraisers, and regularly assisted the St. Patrick’s priest as an altar-server. Joe has been ac cepted at University of Or egon. He has been accepted into their Scholars Program and plans to study business economics. Lindsay Cutsforth, HHS, was active in volleyball and golf, receiving awards from BMC A ll-League. She has been student of the month and made honor roll and re ceived aca demic letters throughout high school. Lindsay also com pleted Lindsay Cutsforth her training at fire and fuels camp through the U.S. Forest Service. For commu nity service, Lindsay par ticipated and helped during Mustang Mop-Up, youth sports. M orrow County Fair, Cycle Oregon, men’s golf tournaments, Booster Club auction. Veterans Day celebration, varsity basket ball games, St. Patrick’s parade, Elks Hoop Shoot, softball field maintenance, and the United Methodist church bazaar. Lindsay plans to attend either Eastern or Western Oregon University to study business manage ment. Justin G utierrez, HHS, was a member of FFA. He was on honor roll throughout high school, re ceived numerous academic achievement letters, was student of the month, math student of the month, and received the President’s Award for educational ex cellence. He also received outstanding s c h o la s tic a c h ie v e ment awards in American history, so cial studies, a nd la n Justin guage arts. Gutierrez His commu nity affilia tions include Heart Smart Career Fair, Friends of the Library, St. Patrick’s Church youth group, and Pheasants Forever. He also participat ed in chamber community events, Mustang Mop-Up, cut firewood, helped on canned food drives, per formed field maintenance for Little League, umpired, and was coaching assistant at Little League baseball games. Justin plans to at tend Washington State Uni versity to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in agri cultural and food systems, majoring in agricultural technology and production management. B rett H arriso n , HHS, was active in base ball and pep band. He is one of four from his senior class chosen as Valedic torian. He is a member o f National Honor Soci ety, Spanish club, district champion baseball team, state baseball playoff team, FFA, 4-H, the ecum eni cal youth group, and the Heppner United Methodist Church. Academic achieve ments include academic letters, honor roll, student o f the month, American history excellence, citizen ship awards, outstanding achievement in social stud ies, outstanding excellence in honors language arts, and outstanding beginning tech nology student. Brett was Heppner chamber’s 2011 Youth of the Year. Brett held positions in student body and as class tr e a s u r e r . He attended many lead ership con fe re n c e s. In FFA, he held officer positions of Brett p re s id e n t, Harrison vice presi dent and sentinel. He earned his state degree, star chapter farmer award, chapter de gree, and participated in nu merous competitions, from market steer competition to public speaking, tractor driving, judging, and sales. In 4-H, Brett held offices as president, ambassador, and junior leader; he also was a 4-H camp counselor. Brett has volunteered his time and services for many of our community events. Brett plans to at tend Washington State Uni versity to obtain a degree in agriculture business eco nomics and finance. K e ls i P u tm a n , HHS, was active in soft- ball, volleyball, and track and field, lettering in all. She was also a member of the Heppner High School choir. Kelsi was on student council and performed the duties of secretary. She is a member of National Honor Society. Kelsi is member of the Heppner FFA chapter and has held the offices of secretary and vice presi dent. As a member of the Blue Mountain FFA district, she held the office of report er. She has won numerous awards. In particular, she has won student of the year in Spanish 1, II, and III, a lg e b ra I, and geom etry. Kelsi has been on h o n o r roll and re Kelsi Putman ceived aca dem ic le t ters. Community service found Kelsi involved with Mustang Mop-Up, Heppner Elks Clean-Up, and Booster Club. She also volunteered her time at the assisted liv ing facility. Kelsi’s work experience consisted of child care and she currently works at a student teller for Bank of Eastern Oregon. Kelsi plans on con tinuing her studies at Or egon State University to obtain a degree in agribusi ness administration. Devin Robinson, HHS, was active in football and basketball. He also par ticipated in band and pep band. Devin is one of four chosen as Valedictorian of his class. He is a member of national honor society and held positions in student body. He is also a member of FFA, 4-H, outdoor club, Oregon high school rodeo, intermountain high school rodeo, Cayuse Rodeo As sociation, and Cinch Na tional High School All Star Rodeo Team. Devin has attended numerous leader ship camps and confer ences. In FFA, Devin held offices as chapter historian, reporter, and secretary. He earned his FFA state de gree and aspires to earn his FFA American degree next. Devin participated in many competitions and won many FFA awards, some o f which were in beef, livestock production, livestock judging, job inter view, public speaking and secretary scrapbook. Devin was also very active in 4-H. He was a 4-H ambas sador, camp counselor, and won awards for champion Community turns out to toss the boot during Heppner Days Welly Toss players again threw the boot during last Friday’s Celebrate Hep pner event. Good weather, with only a few gusts of wind, brought 97 people to try their luck. Four team s p ar ticipated. First place went to the Forest Service team, “The Extinguishers,” with members Justin Botefuhr, K yle Jo h n so n , Jo rd an Wright and Dale Boyd. Wheatland Insur ance team members Steve Rhea, Nancy Snider and J Terri Schaber tossed their way into second place. Third place was the Heppner Family Foods team of Amy Patterson, Liz Titus, Michael Hawks and Carmelo Di Salvo. The Murray’s Drug team o f John, Sean and Kevin Murray and Danny Dougherty took fourth. I n d iv id u a l to p throws were: Cody Fletcher , 40 feet; Amanda Matthew, 54 feet; John Wilson, 68 feet and Drion Donner, 93 feet. V. Devin’s academic awards were Gold Presiden tial awards, honor roll, and student o f the year in m a th , language arts, te c h nology, and US history. Devin He earned Robinson title of HHS knowledge master in 2008 and 2011. He was a peer tutor for math in 2011. Devin was on prom court and crowned homecoming king as senior. Rodeo found Devin holding offices from president to tie down rop ing event director to judge. Devin was a Tupper coun selor, and he attended and completed the US Forest Service fuel and fire camp. Devin also volunteered his time and services for many of our community events. D ev in ’s passion for ranching and rodeo will take him to Oregon State University to study agriculture engineering. He also plans to continue independently in intercol legiate rodeo. A lex R ietm ann, IHS, was active in basket ball, football and track. He received football’s Most Inspirational award this year. He is a member of na tional honor society and the youth group at St. Williams Church. Alex is very ac tive in the youth group and participated in canned food drives, and the group often traveled to Portland and helped at Blanche House and Outreach Ministries, where they served dinners and donated clothes gath ered by the group. The youth group helped in the painting of the church basem ent and held a Alex labor au c Rietmann tion to raise m oney. In national honor society, Alex participated in track meets and a MCGG cleanup day. Alex was on the Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes community service team also, where he helped with fundraising spaghetti feeds. Alex was a watershed field day group leader and helped to referee middle school basketball games. Alex plans to at tend Mt. Hood Community College to begin his studies in business. He would then like to transfer to East ern Oregon University to complete his degree. Alex has a passion for track and field and would like to par ticipate in that sport while attending school. Tanner Rietmann, IHS, was active in football, basketball, and track and field, and received the Dairy Farmers academic award for football and basketball. He also played in the Ore gon eight-man all star game and was alternate for the East-West Shriner game. In track and field, Tanner took 2nd place in the 4x 100M relay in dis tric ts and placed 5th in state. Tanner is a member o f national honor soci Tanner ety, is a Big Rietmann Sky schol ar athlete, and has been on honorr each year. He is W endy’s high school Heisman school w inner and state finalist and was homecoming king as se nior. Tanner was involved with student body, holding offices of activities direc tor and vice president. As class officer, he held the vice president and president positions. Tanner also was a member of Spanish club and drama club and was on prom committee and year book committee. Tanner’s community service includes participating in JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, the lone youth track meet, the lone youth group elf auction, MCGG clean-up, and wa tershed field day. He also was a middle school bas ketball referee and Tupper counselor. Tanner plans to attend Pacific University to major in business and would like to minor in ex ercise science, biology or chemistry. Boardman puts on running shoes for 4th of July Runners and walkers from around the Pacific Northwest will gather on Monday, July 4th for the Board- man Thunder Run and Walk. The event is organized as a 5K or 10K run and a 5K walk. Rain or shine, participants will leave the starting gate at 8 a.m. The course offers a challenge to even the most experienced runners, as participants race along the shores of the Columbia River and through dense growth areas on groomed paths. Organizers promise that walkers, too, will find the course ready-made for fun, a good workout, and an opportunity to enjoy the trails and paths along the Columbia River. Winners will be recognized in every age group.
